Yup head to heads first, then goal difference.

That was a surprise, I must say.

Crazy end to the group. Poland should have taken their chances in the first half and Russia just f*cked up.

If Portugal goes through tomorrow, they'll play against Czech Republic and Germany against Greece. Either way in theory, would be easier matches for the two Group B teams then the ones they played on the group stage.

I think Poland made a bad approach for this game, basically they spent all their forces in the first like 30 minutes of the game, The Czech ones defended and tried to control the first half. The second half Poland was really tired and not focused and a "fresh" Czech team started to control and dominate the rest of the game.

I was rooting for Poland but oh well, in my opinion a really bad management of the game was the cause of defeat, this happened to in the first game against Greece, first half dominated by Poland and the second one Greece almost took the victory with 10 players.

We never take our chances that come before 15 mins. :( We never do! x(

I think the coach is an absolute ****. He is so ******* negative. Didn't give the kid from Youtube a single chance and then subbed Obraniak when there was a free kick to be taken in the last game.

bdw,Pilar and Gebre Selassi have been total B E A S T.

Bye Bye Arshavin and don't forget to show Dzagoev the way to Arsenal. he scored thrice and Sir_Didier_Drogba said he likes him!

Que em dius. :(

The coach was afraid of the counter attack against Russia and put Brozek in the box to receive the free kick? Wolski never played a single minute. What's the point of calling such talent if you don't plan to use him? Just so that he can sit on the bench? He may as well watch from the stands.

Oh, so deciding factor in the group is direct game? That's why Greece top Russia?

i'd say that was a surprise!!

Goal Differential :

Russia 5-3 (+2)
Greece 3-3 (0)
Czech 4-5 (-1)

Is this the first time ever in a major international tournament where goal differential or goals scored is not the first tiebreaker?

It doesn't make sense why they would change that. The whole point of group play and why it works is because it's not just wins and losses, it's how many goals you score and how many goals you give up. That's why every goal supposedly matters. Russia should not have been in a situation where it could lose by a single goal to Greece (who was 0-1-1 coming into the match) and be eliminated. The only way Greece should have been able to advance was via a win by 3 or more goals, or by a win and a draw in the Czech vs Poland match. (in the latter case Greece would have won the point differential over Czech, 0 to -2, if they were both tied with 4 points)

Not only did Russia have the goal differential tiebreaker over Greece, but it also had the best goal differential in the whole group by 2 goals and a far superior goal differential than the Czechs. (by 3 goals) Russia also beat the Czech Republic 4-1, while Greece lost to Czech Republic 2-1.

check out this article i found. apparently we're not the only ones confused, even those reporting on the game were under the impression it was the usual tiebreakers.

I wanted Poland to qualify, it would be more exciting.

so Germany , Portugal-Denmark-Netherlands are officially in semis.

But the Czech's won the game so they had 6 pts anyway. It was only the head to head win that counted between GRE and RUS.

True but still Russia had a better points differential then Greece. under the usual group stage tiebreakers Greece would have had to do more than just win by a goal vs Russia due to the earlier result and being down 3 full points. If lets say Poland vs Czech would have ended a draw, with the 1-0 Greece win there were a 3 way tie for 1st with each team with 4 points. In that scenarios Russia would not only have qualified but got the top seed in the group. it's an unusual situation that i don't think the public was made aware of heading into the tournament.

Yeh but because there was no three way tie, the goal differential didn't matter anyway.

Poland showed some heart, the players did good, i think the coach just made the wrong choices about how to approach the game.

If Portugal beats Netherlands and Denmark beats Germany, wouldn't Germany likely be eliminated with Portugal and Denmark qualifying? If both are 1-0 wins, then each team would have 6 points and a +1 goal differential margin, and wouldn't Denmark and Portugal advance via goals scored? (each with 4 vs the 3 for Germany)
