Portsmouth have beaten Tottenham in the FA Cup semifinal and will face Chelsea in the final.
Holy ****. What a story. First off, Avram gets to face his old club in a final, and he lost 3 of them at Chelsea, that's a story on its own. Then we have the fact that Portsmouth went into ******* administration, are last in the league, relegated, and in the FA final. My god. I'd **** my pants if they actually beat us, but still, it's a great story.
Other talking points: Gareth Bale is amazing. A great match from the left-back, and I fully expect someone big to come after him. I wouldn't be surprised if Barca or Madrid came in knocking, although I'd rather he stayed in the Premiership. Only club I could imagine getting him would be City, or maybe Pool. But for that he might as well stay at Spurs.
Also, Portsmouth's first goal went in after Dawson (who, incidentally, has said that he is reluctant to book a holiday for the summer in case he gets a late call-up (which I think he deserves)), slipped at the worst possible time on the terrible Wembley pitch.
This success for Portsmouth has made me realise how smart Avram Grant is. He was sacked at Chelsea after really doing quite well, but his sacking, and the fact that he was following Mourinho, left him looking worse than he is. But look at what he's done. He's taken a club that was doing terribly, on and off the pitch, and taken it to the FA cup final. He came in after the season's start, always a tough task, and had to contend with the club selling so many players, and injuries taking others, lack of motivation due to the players not getting paid, and staff getting laid off. It's quite a feat.
Frankly, no matter what he did in the league, he was always going to end up winning. No one can fault him for their relegation, and if he somehow manages to get them enough points so that had they not been docked 9, they would've stayed up, he would be an absolute hero. Actually, he already is. I saw several banners at Wembley with his quotations. So the fans like him, the players, as seen in the celebrations, like him, and all this when he was in charge at their relegation. He can stay and try to bring Portsmouth up, which I don't think would be smart, nor am I sure he'd be able to, or leave and go to another club. Personally, I think he should be swimming in offers after this.
Oh, and he's had Portsmouth get a few good results in the league, too. Actually, it's been said many times that Portsmouth don't deserve to lose many of their matches, and that they lay well enough, but the results don't go their way. I hope all of this doesn't go unnoticed by clubs with a functioning structure. Imagine what he could do at a club when given a full season and a summer transfer period.
And onto the league. Other than the City-Brum match, everything else ended 0-0, which was unique. It also meant that Pool are quite certainly out of next year's CL and United could find themselves 3rd by the next matchday, a point off Arsenal and 4 off Chelsea, assuming they both win their games at hand. The matches are against Tottenham and Bolton, respectively, I believe.
And Arsenal finishing 2nd would actually do a lot of good for Arsenal. The whole 'no trophies' thing has been thrown in their faces, but if they finish 2nd, it would count as progress. Last season they were 4th, not close to the title, and dancing with 5th spot. This year, even if they finish 3rd, their presence near the top spot would still be progress, although 3rd would be progress that will get overlooked, especially when they're clearly behind ManU and Chelsea, and the european elite, on the pitch, as has been proven in their big matches. But they could clinch 2nd, hell, they could win the title (undeservedly), and it will get some people off Wenger's back.
Pool NEED to get 4th spot, and they won't. They're in a bad financial situation, and they need the CL money. City don't need the money, they can do with another year out of the CL, and Spurs don't need it as much as Pool, since it's not income they're losing, it's income they could gain. If City get 4th spot, they can offer money as well as CL footie, and Pool won't be able to compete with that. The step backwards will lead to some exits, and I don't think many stars will be lured to a club in their situation. Villa and Spurs are progressing, so the big loser here is Liverpool.
