They have a chance all season-long. Once the Top 3, or Top 7-8 are set a few matches from the finish, you'll take away some excitement from the finish.

We apologize for keeping the yellow too long
Yellow Card
1. If there was a playoff in place, Roy Hodgson would not be resting his players with 2 months still left in the season. And, as I'm sure you remember, last season's second half surge from Fulham made the title fight much more interesting......and pulled them in closer to where they eventually finished. And they were only chasing a Europa League spot......imagine the excitement around Craven Cottage if they were STILL in the hunt for a Champions League spot. Many other chasing teams would also be pushing for it. Who's to say that the top 7-8 would be settled with a "few" games to go? There's absolutely no guarantee of it happening consistently.

2. It even works in the lower divisions.

The gap between #1 and #7 (based on 2009-2010 figures) in terms of EPL TV money is not that big.

1. United....£52.996 million from broadcast rights was £167,000 more than Chelsea
2. Chelsea
3. Arsenal....£51.712 million.
4. Manchester City...£49.627 million
5. Tottenham = Man City minus £167,000
6. Liverpool...£48 million
7. Aston Villa...£45.9 million

This season, clubs like Birmingham City, Fulham, Everton or even Blackburn would have this as further impetus to push for that last spot. There's no assurances that the top 7 would be locked up with a "few" games to go. None!

the main off-season issue is the last champions league spot, not who won and who didn't win various individual awards because all those winners would gladly trade in the plaudits for an epl title. Sorry but that's the truth and you know it.

It's time for a playoff. The league needs to follow the eredivisie. The dutch have got it right. Ie england, it should be the top 3 +1 where 4-7 fight it out in a playoff. No need for a 39th game. Just a playoff is required.

There's no time like the present to implement it.

They should have it in place for the 2010-2011 season. More games, even larger tv audience, more money for the league, more money for wembley..........it's a win-win situation.

the playoff system should NEVER happen. A team scratches and claws its way to 4th place and you want them to step aside in favor of the team in 7th place?
