The ref was great. Cole gets sandwiched by two players and conceedes a freekick (:/) .

Paraguay were lucky that it was only 1-0.

I'm not getting into this in the England National Team thread, but yes I certain can base it on one game if all of the players are deliberately trying to injure their opponents.

I dont think they were trying to injure him but more of intimidating like every other

national team does in the World Cup like argentina, italy, and all the rest of the 30

teams....

Yeah, they were "intimidating" the US in the 80th minute of a game they were down 2-0.

England get a win in their first game for the first time since 1982. I was listening to Five Live in between games and I have to revive this point that one caller made: England lose a LOT with Gerrard playing as a sort of holding midfielder. He's such a dynamic game changing kind of player that by keeping him in a defensive role you lose a lot of instant offense that he is able to provide. Since Owen was invisible and maybe not completely fit, I don't think it's a bad idea to play Crouch as a lone striker next game against T&T and use a holding mid to free up Stevie.

In the last few minutes, as a defensive midfielder, Hargreaves played very well I thought.

England won their first game on 1998, against Tunisia, if i recall correctly Shifty. 2-0, Shearer scoring.

Obviously not in minute 80. I know your talking about the challenge Rafael Marquez did

on cobi jones but you have to remember that Marquez was only 23 so he lacked

maturity and experience. That challenge was just the way he tried to let out his

frustration of Mexico loosing to the u.s. Although you must recall that Mexico could

have tied the game if that ucking Portuguese bitch ref had called the clear penalty when a

u.s player cleared the ball heading toward the goal with his hand. Everybody in the

stadium saw it except for him.... (I call it "la mano del pinche gringo")

I don't think we need to see the 4-5-1 during the group stage, to begin the games with anyway. It's an option but only for the better opposition, when we come up against teams who like to have a play-maker in the hole, operating behind the stricker(s), Argentina, etc come to mind.

England play best when we are high up the pitch and play with a fast tempo. That was evident in the first half. The back line was high up the pitch and we squeezed Paraguay out of possession. The final ball wasn't great however so we failed to make the most out of some good moves.

However, in conditions like that you can't play a high tempo game for the whole 90 minutes, that's fair enough. What you have to is keep the ball and make the opposition work for it. We failed to keep the ball because we were so inclined to hit long balls up to Crouch.

I can see what Sven tried to do but it was initiated wrongly. You can't play a long ball game to Crouch if he has no one playing off him, ala Owen. It just gives the opposition possession and they force you back with the next wave of attack.

Anyhow, fingers crossed Rooney will be ready for the knock out stage so we wont need this discussion.

That's true according to Televisa Deportes England has not scored in the second half

in their previous last 20 world cup matches plus the one against Paraguay makes it 21

games....

yeah England loses a lot playing Gerrard in this position... but it's difficult for him to play offensive as there is Lampard who is also offensive.... probably the best solution is to play one striker and Gerrard playing behind him and a natural holding player like Carrick.... but i think Eriksson was not satisfied by Carrick's performance in the friendlies....

If England play Brazil we should play:

-------------Robinson-------------

Gaz--------Rio-----Terry----A Cole

---------Becks-----Gerrard--------

-------------Lamps----------------

-----------------------------------

-----------------------------------

Lennon/Walcott--Owen-------J Cole

Walcot or Lennon and Joe Cole to push up as far as they possibly can and screw over Carlos and Cafu.

I would take out Gerrard and put Rooney and put Owen/Crouch. I don't like England when Gerrard and Lampard play at the same time. Other then that I like ur starting lineup Daz. :p

Completely disagree. And personally if you're gonna leave out either Lamps or Gerrard, I leave out Lampard.

Gerrard in the club level is great but when he is in the NT level he just isn't great and is invisible in the matches.
