Why/how does that even happen there in the first place though? We have fairly large Lebanese populations here, and other Middle-Eastern people as well and I can't even imagine gang rape trips ever happening, it's just inconceivable. Same with white people forming lynch mobs and running out beating bystanders... and our government is pretty soft on crime around here too, it's a joke in fact.

I know man, Toronto, Canada is class.

We do have similar kinds of conflicts just not at the scale happening in Australia or France right now.

I remember a few years ago watching race based gang fights. Blacks vs. Persians, White Rockers vs. Russians/Eastern Europeans, Blacks vs. Asians, etc. Most of the time spectators would join "their side" mid fight adding to the madness. Never did I see these groups attack innocent bystanders though, the conflicts were always kept within the two(or more) groups.

I get accounts from others I know in Australia, well Sydney to be exact telling me they are subjected to racism and taunts from across the street, from all walks of life.

This was the first time I have heard of such things (only yesterday) and the day before, look, I am in Melbourne which has a large multi-cultural population but I cannot believe people in Sydney are subjected to such rubbish.

Nice to see white immigrant descendents having a right whinge about other immigrants.

Defend the Aussie way of life? Be-er?

Ok, I am bored and a bit angry at this, I have wrote an incoherent piece of crap that I am going to share. It isnt ordered or anything, just whatever came into my mind, I wrote, so I am going to share it. It is the view of a White-Anglo Australian (me). Read it if you want, get mad at it, disagree with it, do whatever I do not care.

The events in Sydney have really provoked a lot of thought into the socio-economic makeup of this country. Where did it all go wrong? I love my country and will always defend our values of freedom, equality, tolerance, however lately this country has been gripped by two extremes of ‘boganism’ and political correctness, where some of these, if not all of these ideals have been compromised.

I have read around the Internet, accounts from people in Sydney and around Australia who preach Muslim. Let me get this clear, I have plenty of Muslim friends, however they are not in my eyes divided into divisions on religion, they are all equals. I accept, and in some instances, learn about there way of life, such as Ramadan and the ideals behind it are a beautiful thing, such as to show how lucky they are to have some of the vital materials in life, such as food, water, etc. I believe my position can be backed up by 99% of the country. I accept these people for who they are, and they accept me for who I am, and laugh and agree with me at the idiotic actions of the upper echelons of society, in the name of political correctness to prevent offending people, such as by removing Christmas festivals at public schools in a Christian country, or making people say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas. I have often laughed with my mother who works for the Salvation Army in Welfare Services that the greatest number of people who flock into the her work to receive the Christmas presents for under-privileged children, are the very parents who complain to schools the day later there child made a Christmas card which wished happiness and goodwill to others.

It is in this country and around the world, that the lowest end of the gene pool makes the loudest noise in the media. The events in Cronulla were only made worse when the media reports another fight is expected in this location. Great work, anyone who didn’t know where it was now does. 5000 drunken pigs in the name of patriotism tried to make a stand in the wrong way that has only made the problem worse. I honestly believe that the values I hold dear are being eroded away by others. In a multi-cultural country we have to meet half way, I wouldn’t want any head gear for Muslim women to be removed from public schools like in France, but god knows that I don’t want Christmas banned from our public schools either.

I hear Muslims within the media and on the Internet say they want the best for this country. As Peter Costello said however, this is a Western country whose values have been entrenched for over a century as a democratic, Christian nation. What they want is Sharia Law and so fourth, we don't want to have an identity or a culture anything like the Middle East, Australians want Christmas be they Christian or Secular and we don't want our traditions sanitised to be more Politically Correct for a couple of camel jockeys.

However, this event has been made worse by the media, if there was no media the problem would I solved itself out, and these gangs and neo-nazis would of be done with each other already, for the better. However now the world, and I join them look at Australia in shame at these events as the lowest end, a minority if society, the idiots which increasingly looks like a majority partake in these cruel, vital and disgusting acts. What the media should do is not focus on the event itself, but what is beneath the event, the under lying problems that can be interpreted in many different ways.

What I see as the biggest problem with the section of society on the outer is much more integrated then we think, its just the minority of the minority that make it appear otherwise, voicing how they want to make peace with the establishment, however only on their terms. If I went to another country, I would have a red hot go at being accepted - I am in their country and they set the rules, and if I didn't like them I shouldn't be there, such as the treatment of women in say Saudi Arabia. It is not like our laws are hidden on any prospective Australians that can contribute to this country for the better. However, instead of just getting on with their lives by getting a job or whatever, they cause problems, and because they are problematic, they will never get a job, and forever leach of the tax payer, be subjected to violence that is often associated with the very lowest areas of society, and this will just duplicate for generations to come.

The problem is epitomised in our streets everyday though when others ask others what nationality they are or religion, I see students ask teachers this and else where. This is the problem, how are we going to ever be united when we pre-define ourselves before we even concede we are all the same, and are a Australians, who are peace loving, etc. Most Anglo, Celtic, white Aussies are very tolerant of other races/religions/creeds, so long as people put Australia first. Most of them have left their old feuds and stuff back in their "mother countries." We're not a religious state, nor a race based one, yet there are people around who must identify themselves in this way first and foremost before saying they're Australian. No one is asking anyone to denounce their faith or heritage but please, recognise your self as Australians people.

There will never be a society free of racism that is multi-culturally based; it’s an oxymoron if there ever was one, but how about a tolerant society that just gets along? But this appears too much to ask to many on both sides, instead they insist we fight one another. I am against this violence, however when I hear cries for a civil war, and that the Lebanese would annihilate the rest of white Australia because they have had military training in their own country, I just laugh. It’s this barbaric attitude that is the entire problem, despite these people preaching they just want a fair go.

However, what I can take some optimism from is how many Australians of Asian decent have integrated into our society. Ten, twenty years ago they were a “threat” but god knows how much better our country is for them bringing their culture (and yummy food) to our country, while we experience there’s such as Chinese New Year for example, in a manner that is tolerant to an extent, and good natured.

Stop the carnage, do a lot of other things such as half immigration and work with what we have got, and make a good go of being tolerant of one another, without the PC bullsh*t.

Oh and another thing, to think almost a month to the day I was jumping up in joy along with millions of Australians all over the nation amongst people of all backgrounds at Federation Square from Anglos and Celts, to Italians, Lebs, Asians, etc etc as an Australia singing Advance Australia Fair and Waltz Sing Matilda, only to see these same songs then be sang to justify the use of violence on some of these minorities just makes my stomach turn.

That night we were all Australian, that is the standard and we have just taken a massive step backwards.

Those were high school kids, every inner city in every major city in North America has ethnic based cliques (who aren't even necessarily gangs) that get into sh!t with each other. Been happening for decades... it's not even remotely close to what's happening in Sydney.

That was a good read, Rob. But -and I'm sorry to say that- for a number of reasons, Australia is relatively more racist than any other US/European country... including Holland. Maybe it had to do with the natives/settlers history. Which was the same problem the US had, but they dealt with the problem rather differently.

I have this physician friend who just moved to Melbourne less than a month ago. He was complaining from the 'muslim compound' he's staying at, so I adviced him to move to the hospital's compound for doctors instead. He told me he'd rather stay at this low-quality compound than be subject to the "middle-eastern treatment" he gets outside the compound...

He was feeling really bad during his first days over there, so I adviced him to have a walk outside the compound, take a look around, mingle with ppl, visit the local tennis courts (we used to play together)... so he does that... and that day, at 8pm, in a crowded street, he's MUGGED!!

And this guy is REALLY strong built. He's the muscle of our gym, I mean he's not the favourite mugging-material for ppl, but for simply asking some ppl for directions, he gets attacked.

He's so miserable and is already set upon coming back. So my point is, Australia does have serious racism issues. And maybe these late events are like a wake-up call. Not to mention all the other minor unreported events...

No, because Arash's parents found out he had sex before marriage with Rob, and that's a big no-no in Pakistan where he's from.

Judging an entire nation on the experiences of 1 person, looks pretty much like generalization to me. That aside, being a member of a minority community myself & a 3rd generation immigrant, I have to say that complete integration into another country & culture is downright impossible. As Rob said tolerance is the best way to go about things.
