Gangs of youths have embarked on a series of revenge attacks across Sydney's beachside suburbs after a day of race-fuelled violence at Cronulla beach in the city's south, with one man stabbed and at least 22 arrested.

About 5000 people descended on Cronulla beach yesterday as mobs yelling racist chants chased down and bashed people of Middle Eastern appearance.

SUBURBS erupted in violence and vandalism last night after gangs of youths of Middle Eastern descent retaliated against a day of racist hatred at Cronulla.

Rampaging thugs at Cronulla, fuelled by alcohol and fury after last week's attack on lifesavers, had earlier bashed men and women of Middle Eastern descent on the beach suburb's streets and at its train station.

Then last night, carloads of young people drove into Maroubra to take revenge for the Cronulla violence, damaging 100 cars, breaking their windows and throwing molotov cocktails.

During the afternoon at Cronulla, police struggled to control 5000 rioters yelling racist chants and "Aussie, Aussie Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi", with many carrying Australian flags in Sydney's worst ever race riots.

There was also evidence that extreme right-wing groups had infiltrated the crowd. "It's time for a war, so join the army of hardcore," one man said.

At least 12 people were arrested and two paramedics were injured in the melee.

Police were pelted with beer bottles and had to use capsicum spray and batons. "I'm ashamed as a man and as the commissioner of police," Police Commissioner Ken Moroney said.

Never underestimate the danger of assembled young men fed by beer and galvanized be some event or rhetoric. Granted, I see this, minus the galvanization, all the time, but what a badge of shame on Australia, who I would never even associate racism with in any way.

In America, its much easier to dismiss some guy killing a sikh man as revenge for 9/11 as some braindead redneck idiot that is nothing like you or me, but I suppose in a smaller more homogenious nation, quotes like that one by the police commish must sum it up pretty well. Hope this outrage is quelled soon enough.

by the way, on the news they said there are plans for further attacks

and rony, the middle-easteners were the ones getting there arse-kicked, all some of the middle-easteners managed to do (small group) was to burn an Australian flag the night after the riots. The flag was on a mast at the RSL, Returned Serviceman's League. These are places where the people who fought for the country are honoured. Disgraceful. (both parties)

Its sad to see this continue to happen in this day and age. Didn't think sh*t like this would happen in Australia though.

This affects Australia's image and you'll see a huge drop in tourism regardless of the way the problem is handled.

why didnt the media focus on the maquarie fields riots revolve around "anglo gangs" attacking police??

the VAST majority of the people listed there are in fact not of middle eastern or "ethnic" origin. yet i guarantee that not one of those "white" criminals was ever referred to in the media as an "anglo saxon rapist" or a "murderer of british descent"





fact is the media is quick to promote crimes as perpetrated by "a man of middle eastern descent" or point out the actions "asian" or "ethnic" gangs. there have been racial undertones in the media for as long as i can remember and it was only a matter of time before the racism it's been planting in the minds of the masses boiled over. 'multiculturalism' and "celebrating our cultural diversity" and all that crap we've been told is just is a mask of political correctness..... racism and ignorance is actually fairly widespread. seeing people wearing "ethnic cleansing" tshirts yesterday, talking freely about keeping "that sh1t out" of australia and "wog bashing" is just disgraceful...... and the actions of the bogans this weekend is worse than anything from "gangs of middle-eastern youths" who are more often than not just a bunch of teens or early-20s proving to their mates how "hard" they are
