Yes, though apparently Napoli are close to signing another serie A centre back (Maksimovic?) which could leave them more open to negotiation over Koulibaly

Well I think the theory was that the price might drop from horrendously crazily extortionate to just very, very extortionate. But it appears the player himself has now concede defeat (he wanted the move) so I guess that's out.

I'm having a little trouble following our defender search - some reports claim we have practically signed a guy called Marcos Alonso (whom I dont know) from Fiorentina and others say the David Luiz deal is being banged out, so I don't know if we will end up with both or if one deal with be dropped when the other is finalised.

Koulibaly (or Romognoli) + Zouma and Cahill backup and I would feel that we might finally have sorted out the centre of our defence for the longterm. With this deal I just feel like we've kicked the problem 12 months down the line.

Luiz is also 29 already, I know some defenders can stay good well into 30s but players were are already clumsy and reckless like Luiz tend only to exacerbate these problems with age (see Ferdinand and Demichelis).

Well, I am glad we got someone, and it is kind of fun and kind of exciting to see him back, and it's tempered by the fact my expectations are now lower both for us in the transfer market and in the season, but I don't find it ideal.

Luiz will improve with Conte, Look what he made of Bonucci.
Most likely. Conte seems to be quite strict with his players, so David Luiz will benefit from that. Regarding his positioning and awareness without having the licence to get forward whenever he wants.

Regarding Bonucci heh... I've never participated in this draft thing you guys have got going on. But I remember a year or two back when ShiftyPowers picked the guy and got shit from basically everybody (myself included) for picking him. But as it turns out it wasn't a bad pick at all lol.

Quite possible. Hindsight 10/10. Although I cannot really recall anyone "approving" that pick.

Sauce?

Anyway just get used to Juve's way of doing quality business. A loan with an option to buy is a thing of the past now. They've figured out a new way. Eventually his contract with Chelsea runs out and they'll have him for free.

Re Bonucci and Luiz comparison - Conte got hold of Bonucci in his early to mid twenties, Luiz is already 29. It's harder to change a player once they get to that age.

I am disappointed we did try to make more use of last years loanees and new additions to the squad - Cuadrado on a three year loan is ridiculous, if Juve wanted him we should have made them buy him, we know they have the money. Van Ginkel loan back to PSV was scuppered by training injury so if it's not all season he might feature (I hope so), and Moses stays.

Thats not true. Abidal is a clear example he was absolutely useless on the ball in his 30s and Pep made of him one of the finest CB in build up.

Again, this is a recurring difference of opinion between you and I but I don't give a shit how good a defender is on the ball or what he 'contributes to build up' if he can't defend efficiently. It will be hard for 29 year old Luiz to un-learn a career of pressing forward and neglecting defensive duties, rashly mistiming sliding tackles and pulling people over in the box.
