His scouting report says his weakness is 'important matches', that's why I was reluctant to start him. But apparently it's not a problem.

A couple of things I was lucky with... The US were playing the confederation's cup at the same time so they sent their B team (never seen this before) and Mexico got beat by Costa Rica in the semi-s in a grueling penalty shootout which left the Costa Ricans much more tired than my team. I though the final was going to be a piece of cake but apparently not. I kicked Mexico's ass in the group stages which I was surprised to do.

Penalties have been very kind to me this FM. I've had 3 or 4 shootouts and won all of them. And I think I've only missed 2 or 3 penalty shots in total during a match.

I'm a little fascinated with average players who seems to prefer above expectations. I wanted to document some by posting screenies, so that in the future if I'm looking to buy players I could maybe get some in the same mold.

Trophies so far:

I quit the Canada job, after getting my cup and noticed Kansas City was an opening. I took the job because they have players to suit my formation and that they are playing in the North American Champions League now (in the group stages) (H). I really want the Toronto job but they seem to be doing well and I can't just wait around for that forever.

They did it that way because in previous version there was a bug that if you played in the Confeds and had to play the Gold Cup, you would get a prompt to call up your Gold Cup players. Except that mid tournament in the Confeds you would lose your first choice players and have them replaced with your Gold Cup squad. So now you have no choice but to send your B team to the Gold Cup now if the Confeds are held that year.

Anyway, if those were the stand outs from Mexico, no wonder they got thrashed.

They could benefit from the system or better players around them. My most memorable overachievement was a youngster on a CL run with Dukla. I lost my star right winger halfway through the season and I only had a 19 year old mediocre prospect to replace him. He stepped in and played GREAT, including a MoM performance in the semi's and a load of assists on the way. Wouldn't have performed the same way in a bad or mediocre CL team.

Wouldn't the average players performing above expectations just be down to luck?

Yeah, what Juventino said, it's probably linked to the tactic. It brings out the best in them.

Speaking of my tactic, I've been using this amazing 3-1-4-1 (1 DM, flat 4 midfield, 1 forward) that I downloaded. It's a little disappointing that I haven't created my own but I tried making my own tactic and it was mediocre with ACS Poli, so ever since then I've been experimenting with downloadable tactics and found this one to be best.

Getting the tactic right is BS, I looked at the so called successful downloadable tactics and almost all of them had an overload attacking mentality. No way I would have guessed that that works best just by me tinkering with it.

I quit Kansas City after finishing the season, after 2 months of being in charge. I just don't like the restrictiveness of the salary cap and would prefer managing in a different league. So to accomplish my North American goal I loaded up the Mexican League. I'l probably go back to MLS once I finish my goals and take it slow with Toronto, but that will be in the far future.

In the meanwhile I saw that France sacked their boss because he failed to make the WC. I was excited to continue my tradition of winning the WC with them (I did so in FM06, and 2010, maybe even one more). However they chose a French manager instead of me. But Holland's manager was also under pressure for not making the WC and I declared interest. To my surprised they said they were flattered and offered me the job. I must have pretty high rep now.

The Holland squad is amazing. They have great depth at all positions, and the whole squad has a high skill level (no relying on a couple star players). An extra bonus is that the team is relatively young, not many of the best players will be over 30 when the 2020 Euros come around. Most of them will be in their prime... ages 26 to 30. I've only played a couple friendlies with the team so far, and Euros qualification starts soon. I'm expecting to win that competition.

It's now June 2018 and my requested Mexican League has loaded. The only First Division team to be without a manager is Tigres. It seems the top team tier contains Chivas, 2nd tier has Pumas, America and Monterray. Tigres is in the tier under I'd say. I would have wished I could have gotten one of the other teams but I want to start coaching at club level again and it will be nice to start with Tigres at the beginning of June, to have the full transfer window available. Money wise they are doing pretty good, one of the best in Mexico, so the team has a lot of room for improvement.

My best players are Edgar Pacheco, Taufic Guarch, Jorge(Jonathan) Espericueta, Cesar Villaluz, and Jose Francisco Torres(USA). Skip, recognize any of them?

Jose Francisco Torres played for Los Pollos Hermanos. We had a Succession Game here for a pretty short while with Xolos Tijuana.

Pacheco is a winger that seemed to have potential but instead just jumped from team to team.

Taufic Guarch is a youth NT player that went to Europe but nothing came out of it, so he's back in Mexico.

Jonathan Espericueta is a promising CM for Mexico. Killer left foot. Has scored several olympic goals with the NT. Part of the u17 WC winners in 2011.

Cesar Villaluz is one of the u17 WC winners in 05. He was supposed to go to Arsenal but never materialized. Now he's your run of the mil Mexican player.

And Torres is a player that showed promise, but ultimately never got called up to Mexican NT, so he accepted a call up for the US since he's US born. He's a decent player for the Mexican league but nothing else.

One of the worst leagues in the world. I also tried an MLS job with the Whitecaps and I quit in a month. Too many restrictions and nobody good wants to play there.

My best performance of the season:

And I totally jinxed the penalty shootout thing with my previous post. I lost to Club America in the semis of the Mexican Cup via shootout.

The league opening stage is coming to an end soon and I've read up on the playoff... it sounds pretty exciting. My team will probably be seeded in the top 4 so I hope I do well.

I hate the Mexican league format. Two seasons per calendar year, playoffs, two cup runs per year and the grouping. The teams essentially play the regular season for seeding purposes and qualification to the CONCACL (which is trash) and Libertadores. It cheapens the individual games the accomplishment of winning titles.

That said, the playoffs can be very exciting.
