That was a wierd day results wise huh? The only team to lose out was Arsenal , but United should have done better today. They were pretty poor (like the rest of us) today.

I bet Fergie has no complaints with this ref today though huh? Very one sided officiating in United's favour, and Villa denied a penalty.

Very surreal day all in all.

the penalty call are you referring to the Vidic Vs Gabby? If so, no way was that a penalty.

Vidic was pulling Gabby's shirt before he even got the ball, and pushed him down as he made contact with it, seen penalties given for worst than that. If it was Ronaldo against Laursen at OT, probably would've been given.

Overall, very interesting day of football indeed for us(Pool, us, Utd). But from the 3 opponents, Villa really went for it. I was really impressed with them.
CR7 was back to his best. :D

vidic was the best player for us. saved our ass a couple of times. we did well in defense but failed to deliver in attack. missing that cutting edge once again. so many crosses but hardly anyone in the box to get to it. Credit to aston villa as well, they have an awesome team this season.

Rooney and Tevez were both pretty much clueless...as was Giggs...he can't play in such games at this age man...especially in central midfield.

1st of all...yes vidic was tugging gabby's jersey away but it happened miles away from the penalty box. It should have been a free kick. But once they stepped into the penalty box, it was a superb tackle by vidic. He got the ball.

As for villa really "going for it", you were apparently watchin a different game. Villa were hanging on for the point esp the last 10-15 mins. But credit to them, it was a well-drilled villa side. We were clueless @ times too at the final 3rd.

I agree that was a free kick and not a penalty. It was a fantastic chance and it was so disappointing that we didn't take it. We just don't seem to be winning away from home this season. It was suprising to see all the big four either draw or lose. I think that is actually the first time this has happened in the history of the PL.

They were hanging on a point alright but they really had a decent go in early stages of the 2nd half, and its not like they parked men against Utd for the whole match, they tried to attack whenever they could, and in the last 10-15, what the hell do you expect when yer the away team against Utd.
Of course a point would be decent.

As for the Vidic foul on Gabby, it is an interesting topic of debate, whether it was a penalty or not, but like I said, if it were Ronaldo in that situation against a Villa defender, I'm sure it would be interesting what the outcome would be and what the Utd fans reactions are like if they didn't have the decision.

They were the home team against Utd.
I just think that this game has sort of proven that we're not where we were last season.
Rooney would have buried that chance last season and we would have won 1-0 and been 2 points closer to Chelsea and L'pool.
It just might not be our year this season, I don't want to get all pessimistic since it's only November but I just don't think we'll do it this season.

umm...Villa were the home team. And if you noticed, Ronaldo usually gets ignored by the referees as he tends to moan way too much. It would be no surprise if he didn't get a call for such a situation.

aww bollocks, I got one wrong again, I never really bothered to do any homework these days before post.(I made another gaff in the England thread :D)
What I meant to say, I was impressed with Villa, because all the time(previous meetings) I watched them against Utd, they were easily steamrolled. But this time it looked as if they weren't going to stay down and die. They actually tried attacking Utd, when in the past, Utd would easily kill them on the break.
Utd did lack the cutting edge up front, Tevez clearly looks unhappy with his role. Shaking his head as he went off(If I remember correctly).
But hey, we all choked up badly that week.
So nothing's change apart the fact that Arsenal drops down the pecking order.

It was just last week........infact it was only a day, or so, ago. The wounds are still fresh....surely.....

Help?

Yeah very true, Villa weren't just pushovers. They didn't create much, but neither did we, resorting to shots from freekicks for most part. Apart from the Rooney chance, United didn't have anything that clear cut that would put them into the lead. Besides i wasn't surprised that Rooney skied it, that's how he and Tevez always shot, get the ball and just smash it. That's why we need Berbatov in those situations because he would play it smart and place it, just like Van Nistelrooy used to. Rooney goes for power 90% of the time, especially when he is that close.

Agreed. Villa gave a good performance. If they can get a little more consistent they'll end up giving Arsenal a real hard time for that 4th spot...I doubt they'll be able to keep up though

its been a funny week tho tbh. So funny that my brain has idled down in the past few days. :p

newbie, its just that week for me. Its all in the past, and no team really gained anything, or lost anything. Apart from Arsenal, who've got a rough time on and off the field.

Good to see a team like Villa doing well. They slowly but surely been getting better and better the last few years. Even more promising since they have so many English players. Must be 70 odd % if not more. Makes a refreshing change. Would love to see them slot in the top 5 if not better.

Weird there no Villa Team thread. Maybe need to start a Villa appreciation thread :D

I'd better mention this, I've just looked at the BBC Sport website and the last time the big four all failed to score in the same weekend was in september 1993 (supposedly anyway, its from 606). Whether that was 3 draws and a defeat I don't know.
