I'd imagine you start to feel old when all your friends start getting married.

Then why the hell would you say something like that on here?

DAMMNIT, we are using this place as a means of escapism from the brutality of reality! No one needs real life on here.

2 thumbs down for you, good sir! Two thumbs down.

I hate to break it to you, but there's no "we" in this.

I don't feel old. Someone making a jokey comment about it on the internet isn't going to make me be like "OH **** I'm 28! That IS old!"

So I've been monitoring Ray-Ban Wayfarers and to a lesser extent Clubmasters on ebay and have noticed that it is IMPOSSIBLE to get a deal. They are way too trendy across all demographics and decades old glasses go for near full retail price.

The inefficiency in the market are the companies that are just as good, or better, that no one has ever heard of. I've had very good luck finding fantastic tortoise Persol glasses which retail for twice what Wayfarers cost, for about 25-50% discount over used Wayfarers. You can luck out on other stuff like Oliver Peoples as well.

I've fallen in love with asics running shoes latterly. I bought like 3 pair in the last month only.

I have none of those things. I have a traditional navy suit, a really nice subtle brown glen plaid suit (that I can never find a place to actually wear it to), and some lower quality suits, but particularly a grey one. And several assorted Carlos*ets that fit to varying degrees. I actually don't care at all for stripes on suits and I don't know how I got the aversion.
I didn't used to particularly like it either, still prefer plain black, but it's something different. Both my suits are Thailand tailored, so fit absolutely perfectly (or did three years and five kgs ago). I think every man should have a good black suit/tux for black tie/formal occasions/weddings etc. Especially as classic dress is back in vogue a bit at those occasions.
The white tie sounds cool as hell. I would LOVE to rock this

Technically black tie I believe. But I guess you're not really allowed to wear a white dinner Carlos*et in my climate, arguably even in the summer. Also I don't attend any events where it would be appropriate, which is sad because Connery is in a dingy bar in this scene.
Yeah, it's funny at loads of events classed as "black tie" there was a phase of the tuxedo with white tux Carlos*et instead of black. Very 70s I think. Could be wrong though. Not really classic dress at all, though would definitely be black tie/tuxedo of anything. Basically just another form of semi formal. The lines were blurred a long time ago. In fact, even black tie was originally just a bastardization of full evening dress.

These days when someone says "formal" they are usually referring to black tie/tuxedo and when they say "semi formal" and tie and suit/blazer will do. Traditionally formal means white tie, semi formal black tie. Anything else is "cocktail", "dinner suit" or any of those other names that are pinned to dress codes these days.

I wore my tails to a work ball recently, because it was fancy dress, and I dressed as the phantom of the opera. I went out afterwards and removed the mask, so was in full evening dress at some seedy clubs. Was fun, and I got loads of...err..positive attention.

My Phantom! I was going to slick my hair back flat, but I ended up getting a hair cut a week before. Didn't wear a cape either, as it wasn't so much a theme party as a formal masquerade ball. Most others wore black tie with a formal masquerade sort of mask, or in funny masks. I thought I'd kill to birds, go super formal and have a theme.

We have a party with a superhero theme tomorrow. We thought that we'd be the Avengers, with me as Iron Man. Don't want to buy a costume though, so I'm trying to figure out if I can do it with the clothes I have.

If not, I'll just put on a gray beanie, get ****faced and tell everybody I'm Hancock.

I didn't see laces on his left foot, but I guess it's just blurry, I can kind of see the bottom of them on his right foot. Either way it doesn't really matter because square toed derbies aren't appropriate either.

Yeah, I don't have court pumps. Both my black shoes are square toed, one with, one without laces. The others are slightly more pointed, but less comfortable, and we were dancing etc.

I wasn't going to go and buy court shoes just for that night. Possibly should have, as I'm sure they'd have lasted forever.

BTW, the reason I have two pairs of square toed black leather shoes, is because I wear them for work. I think court shoes are too formal looking for work.

I don't care for square toed shoes in general, and if you google it you will find a million articles saying that they are the worst thing in the world. Court shoes look gay gay gay, like you're cross dressing, I think you can get away with just standard black oxfords; I think they're supposed to be shiny patent leather, but that's not a huge deal IMO. This would be appropriate IMO

For work, there are a lot of other options! Bucks, desert boots, penny loafers, tassel loafers, suede wingtips. I wear penny loafers a lot, but they're pretty retro style that most people probably wouldn't rock. I also wear white suede bucks a LOT and think they're great casual style that would work in an office that doesn't require a suit. White might be a little weird, for a work place, but navy blue or brown would be fine; they range in price from affordable (Bass) to very very expensive (most good shoe companies make a version).

I actually kind of like the white dinner Carlos*et. However it's technically only supposed to be worn in the tropics.

Yeah, I've read a few places that square toed dress shoes are a faux pas, but meh. For work, we have to wear black leather.

For white tie you're meant to wear court shoes, if we're going to be specific (and for white tie we should), then go the whole hog.

Your suggestions would be fine with black tie
