Son, put Tiago, Jarosik in the middle, DogBra up front and your team couldn't hit a bulls arse with a shovel. Your second string is no better than ours.

Ok guys, I think I really need to correct a lot of very faulty and anti-athlete assumptions that most of you have.

...He said it was his dream to play at Man U, and now he will do anything to get to Chelsea, he only cares about money...

Let me ask you this. How much loyalty will you have to your KFC Manager if the Taco Bell next door offers you $15 an hour? I think every one of us is changing uniforms. Soccer is A BUSINESS. These men make their livings doing it (and they only have about 15 years to make all the money for the rest of their lives) and when they treat soccer clubs as employers there's never a shortage of you people calling for their heads. They are using the same tactics all of us would use to get the best salary to support their families. I know it seems wrong for me to say they are looking out for their families when they make millions, but it's true, and since they can't play soccer until they're 65 (we can work that long), they need to make money for 70 years. The only loyalty you can expect from a professional athlete is the same loyalty you would show to your own employer... if you're offered a better deal, that's very little.

...Essien signed a 3 year contract with Lyon, if he didn't intend to see it out, he shouldn't have signed it in the first place...

This might come as a shock to some of you, but not everyone has 20/20 forsignt. He didn't know when the best financial opportunity of his life would come up, but this is clearly it and it is his right to take it. If I have a 2 year contract with the State Attorney's Office and a Huge Law Firm wanted to make me partner and give me a million dollar salary, I don't care what that contract I signed says, this is the opportunity of my life! Hmmm.... so I can work for the State my entire life for pittance, or I could seize the opportunity. It's my right to take it. Yes, some sort of buyout will be necessary to get out of my contract, but guess what guys, that isn't determined by my employer and no one else, it's what is FAIR as judged by an impartial arbitrator. Lyon are asking an UNFAIR amount to release Essien from his contract, and therefore are violating his rights, rights that all of us certainly would claim for ourselves in a comparable situation.

Step back from the situation and think of athletes, not as heros or any garbage like that, but as hard working employees like the rest of us. Unfortunately they are supposed to be loyal and miss out on the best opportunities of their lives because idiots care WAY too much about games. Loyalty to a club? Get that mess outta here.

It's a mis-quote, a mis-quote from a very crap website. This is what Pardew actually said:

"This is a well-prepared team, and that is testament to the staff we have at West Ham United now. I think my staff here is as good as any in the Premier League, including the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea, and the spirit in the squad is excellent."

why some ppl expect players to be loyal unto death, just like a fan,is beyond me.To these guys it's just a job and it amazes me how it winds people up.We dont know this guy,we dont wanna know this guy.Who gives a toss what he and his club are doing to each other. It aint gonna make a difference to my life or your life. They can shaft each other till the sun goes down as far as i am concerned.
As for going to Chelsea? Sure he wants to go where the most money is .As a working guy thats understandable.Plenty of players leave clubs before their contracts expire.Viera was one and Figo....they all do it..As someone mentioned earlier, Saha going to Man U ....people in glass houses should not throw stones.......... :brow:

I don't give a rat's *** about his loyalty to any club. I care about the fact that if players are allowed to go on "strike" and ignore their contracts because another club has shown interest it will ruin football.

ShiftyPowers, I am not a lawyer, but I am almost positive you cannot back out of a contract just because you regret signing it. Call me crazy.

I cannot honestly believe that Abramovich can afford to pay £2 million per goal forever.
He runs Chelsea just on the interest he makes a year.

And still makes a profit from interest

From ITV Teletext

"LYON REJECTS FINAL ESSIEN BID"

Lyon president Jean Alus said "We have rejected their last offer and we are closing the door , it is great news for the club" he added.

Good, well he will most likely raise his value next season and during the World Cup so then the 32 million pounds should be worth it. He was not needed at all for the Blues, I'm happy that Tiago is staying, should've offloaded Geremi IMO.

No contract is airtight, they can be settled. Maybe Essien has to pay back his sign-on fee and some compensatory damages, but once again, it would be fairly set by an arbitrator and not an outrageous fee. FIFA or UEFA might have their own laws about contracts that I'm not familiar with however.

I just find it ironic that players can't get out of their contracts while clubs have no problems ignoring the contracts.

Do players get compensated for the rest of their contracted salary if he is sold?? Especially if he is forced out??

Anyways, I agree with ShiftyPowers in saying that players are just an employee of the club. As for loyalty, does clubs show any loyalty when they want to sell? I don't think so....

Sure, they get paid mega bucks, but hey, that's because they are talented and its the premium they get for their talent. (yes, even Liam Miller is talented).... can you play at their level? If not, what right do you have to complain about their salary? If you can, then switch your career and start playing...

I reckon every player contract should have a buyout clause that has to be agreed on signing...

Yeah, I think it's the law in Spain to have a buyout in every contract because all players seem to have a buyout. Of course they're REDICULOUS! I think Roberto Carlos' is like 150 Million.

Well players always have to agree to terms with the new club when they are sold. Arsenal can't just up and decide "Hey Bergkamp, we don't need you any more, we're selling you to some second division team in Ireland where they'll pay you $150 a week." If they don't want to go, they don't have to: the team signed a contract. That's sort of the deal with Peter Lovenkrands at Rangers. He had a bad year last season and they want him to move on and clear up some wage space. But he knows he'd probably have to take a pay cut, so he seems happy to fight for his place and collect his check.

How big is YOUR penis?
30 million plus for a defensive midfielder, which in a fact, a post which Chelsea have more than enough players to fill in that post . . . :|

I don`t know which more stupid. Lyon, Chelsea or the player himself . . .

Essien knows he's not going to play a huge amount of games for Chelsea, he knows that (he'd get his fair share of playing time, though, with 4 competitions and all).

In the end, the guy is just looking for a big pay day [duh!].
