I got eliminated from my UEFA Cup group (Freiburg, Middlesborough, and Porto advanced; I finished ahead of Trabzonspor) so I played him in the last game of the group (Trabzonspor at home) and he scored twice. He set the record for Winterthur goals in a season with 20, he's played 14 times -- 5 as a sub, it's December on my game.

Give the lad a league start.

He's my leading scorer in the league with 5. He got some starts around October when I had three first teamers out.

I actually jumped up and pumped my fists like Herrera when I realized the goal was going to stand (at first I thought he fouled the keeper).

Yeah, it was pretty good. I got bailed out by the goalkeeper a few times and was pissed Christensen missed that penalty but that was a great way to beat them.

I won the league!

Basel had a really off year because their squad is incredibly old (they rectified this as soon as the window opened by signing Sherman Cárdenas (!) among others). Their squad looks pretty fucking scary, actually. My second best striker (he's no Abdeslam) also asked to leave and half of Germany plus Barcelona put in bids so I'm pretty much consigned to losing him. Oh well, I got the trophy. Basel won the Cup because it wouldn't be a season in Switzerland unless Basel won something.

I won with two games to play so I played all the fringe players and the goalkeeper who was demanding first team football for the last two games and this happened.

A 3. I'd never seen a goalkeeper get a 3. Guess who's getting sold to the first bidder?

Also, Young Boys has a women's team called Young Boys Frauen. Some of them aren't bad.

Scotland approached me so I accepted. Will coaching Scotland improve my chances to sign players or can that only happen by continuing to make Winterthur bigger?

Next step European success?

We'll see. I'll consider qualification to the group stage a success because it'd be huge financially. The UEFA Cup group stage was a real eye-opener in terms of how big of a gap exists between the Swiss League and top European leagues. Porto just wiped the floor with me.

I love the match engine, everything is pretty good for the most part. The fact that when you get a rash of injuries they all happen to the same position is annoying though. I had 7 (!) forwards injured in early August.

Anyway, qualified for the Champions League by doing this:

Just beat Levadia Tallinn in the CL Qualifiers. You know anything about them, Sir_Didier_Drogba?
Yeah, they are the Tallinn team on the up at the moment, two teams have dominated Estonian football since the end of the cold war - Levadia and Flora - with 8 and 9 titles each respectively. Across the last few seasons Flora have been dominant, however more recently Flora have been poor and Levadia took the title this season for the first time since 2009 (estonian season runs march - november due to weather). Levadia will be playing in next years Champions League qualifying rounds.

Is football a minor sport there? Obviously FM isn't a reflection of reality but they got swept aside really easily.

Got in the Champions League too soon, team isn't ready for this. I some how got a point off Rangers (who made the semis last season!) at Schützenwiese and played Brann to a 1-1 at their place. Lyon completely played me off the park at Stade Gerland, too strong, too quick, too good, just couldn't get near them. Hopefully Brann will have the same issues and I'll take three points off them at Schützenwiese on the final day of the group stage and parachute into the UEFA Cup.
