A Francesco Totti inspired Roma underlined their title credentials with a thrilling 4-2 win at Sampdoria. The No 10 grabbed a brace – including a stunning volley – to see his club jump to second in the standings before tonight’s Palermo-Inter clash.
Doria went into the tie with a point to prove after their 1-0 reverse at Torino last week which was also their third loss in four games. Delvecchio was preferred in midfield to Franceschini, while Flachi started on the bench after his two-month betting ban came to an end.
Roma responded with their now classical 4-2-3-1 formation with Pizarro partnering De Rossi in the centre after the Giallorossi lost Aquilani to a serious knee injury on Saturday. Totti again started as the lone striker, while Panucci was fielded on the left.
The capital giants started brightly after Panucci found Totti, but his attempted volley was mistimed. Pizarro then worried Doria adorers with a shot that Berti was forced to divert away for a corner. The away side didn’t have to wait for too much longer though…
Totti opened the scoring by firing his angled drive past Berti after being assisted by De Rossi. However, the celebrations were brief as one captain’s goal was followed by another. Volpi made it 1-1 when his shot from the edge of the box found the top corner.
Samp were looking to in-form striker Quagliarella to threaten, but his match lasted just 28 minutes. The former Toro man picked up an injury and was subsequently replaced by Flachi. Maggio then went close for the home team.
Roma took the lead in minute 33. Perrotta, fresh from his two goals in the 7-0 thumping of Catania, found the net again. His powerful right-footed shot was just too good for Berti to get behind. This time they kept the lead for more than 60 seconds, if only because Bonazzoli’s header finished just wide of the post.
The away side were in control of the tie and went close through Pizarro until Panucci got his name on the scoresheet. The defender, who grew up in the Genoa youth ranks, got on the end of a Totti cross to make it Roma 3 Sampdoria 1.
The two teams swapped chances after the restart. Berti denied a fourth by blocking a Cassetti near post shot, while Doria went very close to reducing the deficit. Substitute Oliveira got enough on his header to beat Doni, but De Rossi cleared off the line.
That was a rare Samp chance though as Roma continued to look for the fourth. Berti denied Perrotta, Taddei then wasted a great chance before Totti did extend his side’s lead in some style. The Italian connected with a cross to volley his angled drive into the back of the net. Awesome!
Totti was soon replaced so that he could be rewarded with a standing ovation as the game basically had nothing left to say. Samp did try to reduce the damage as Olivera and Flachi looked for their club’s second, but with no luck until they were awarded an injury time penalty for a Cassetti foul on Flachi. The latter scored to make it 4-2.
