Do you know stuff about Wi-Fi and Blackberries etc

Before anyone jokes, because i can see it coming from a mile off, don't post a photo of a blackberry or something.

Anyway, im writing an article on Wi-Fi and stuff like that for small business, stuff that allows people to communicate in the mobile world that arent laptops per se. So stuff like Wi-Fi and Blackberry's come right at the top of the list.

Just wondering if anyone can help me with any info you might have (that isnt commonly known) on these kind of areas. Interesting statistics, things i could mention or other products similar to Blackberry's that are good, and why.

Literally, anything... apart from just an explanation of Wi-Fi, even i can do that.

Well, you can in general talk about PDAs as well as the various business applications available for mobile phones.

Apart from the calender, notes, to do list that are now part and parcel of every phone, a standard business phone now comes equipped with functionality that makes at the strongest asset for a businessman on the move..etc etc...

Now to get serious. How about those cell phones that work like 2-way radios. That's a big demand for businesses were employees drive around, I.e. Construction workers, field technicians, contractors. etc...

The Blackberry is produced by my local company Research In Motion. Their HQ is beside my university campus and I pass by it everyday. I know 2 people that work in the production line as their summer jobs. The co-founder/co-owner of RIM just purchased the Nashville Predators of the NHL.

Company is named RIM - Research in Motion.....is located in Waterloo, Ontario, CANADA. They say it's a must-have in your portfolio of stocks....if I had the money I would.

I've seen many a person using it...that side thumb-scrolling thing is quite handy, but can't say much else, since I've never used one.

A Blackberry is really expensive. I'll jump on the PALM bandwagon when they introduce a model with Wi-Fi. If I want a blackberry, I'll just install it on the PALM. Of course, I could also just get a US$5 data plan (5mb), open up a free MS exchange account somewhere, and install active sync and be on my way on a dime in comparison. Blackberry's are great for one thing: Push email. If you want to do anything else the OS is pretty weak.

The BB allows business folk to be productive the moment they jump in the car until the plane leaves the terminal; and after the plane lands until they arrive at the other office. They don't waste any time waiting. This way, they don't have to work long hours every day just because 1/2 of the day is spent traveling.

In a senior management consultant role (just as an example) one would primarily read emails all day and when people ask questions, give them answers. A blackberry would greatly increase productivity here.

At the end of the day, they're ONLY going to give you a BlackBerry if they feel (through visual justification on your part, with all likelyhood) that it will dramatically improve your productivity when away from your desk/office.

As a little nugget that I found interesting when I heard it for the first time, the data charge for most non-blackberry devices is significantly greater than that of the Blackberry if you are using it for email. This goes for the PALM as well and is why people considering buying a BlackBerry are told to make sure they look into how it charges before they decide...usually, IT departments would be responsible for this.

Tom, yes...in short.

I heard of a person who recently got an 8125 and after the first month of use was shocked to get a data usage charge for US$77.89. He was told that he was charged for the data transferred using the Wi-Fi at home! Now, he also has a Dell Axim with Wi-Fi and transfers data using that as well. No other service is needed, so why he be charged? He is not using their network and it's basically his device and his Wi-Fi.

There 's a good chance that his 8125 was using cellular data instead of wifi at some point. This happens a lot if you load a web site before wifi has finished connecting or if the wifi drops and the 8125 falls back to cellular data.

To avoid this situation, he should have made a habit of not leaving GPRS turned on. That way, he should be able to see the notification when his 8525 starts to connect to the data network. In order to prevent that from happening in the future, a user needs to use an app called "NoData". You can manually switch your GPRS connection off and on in order to NOT inadvertently connect to Cingular's network while on WiFi.

No wonder they offer "UNLIMITED DATA CHARGE PLANS".
