I know a lot of people don't like the whole comparison thing and this isn't meant to be a "versus" thread. Many people on here know me as making the patches for the PC versions of the Konami games for the past 3 years and I figured they might be interested as to why the series has pissed me, and a lot of others, off this year.
- Still only part licensed which means the usual editing to make the game realistic. Cue the normal 100's of patches which most people can't apply unless they have a modded console or you have the PC version.
- Depth of number of leagues still poor. No empty slots to even create your own teams.
- Transfers guaranteed to be almost 6 months out of date by release of PES5 and worse by the North American release of WE9:I.
- The first version of another 4 to come this year of the same game, e.g. PES5, WE9:I, WE9 Korea, WE9 Final Evolution (or whatever evolution name they come up with this year!) Each version a little better than the last so your game is out of date within months. Staggered worldwide release (when they really don't change too much) between WE9 to PES5 to WE9:I to ensure gamers worldwide can't get the game other people have until months or half a year later!
- Crowd of 500 while playing Man Utd v Real Madrid? Please!
- Sidesteps everytime you move anywhere but forward, they made it automatic this year and because of the lack of more than 8 directions, this makes player movement a joke.
- WTF is the stuttering when a player takes a throw - looks stupid.
- Constant fouls for minimal contact. Some games are literally stop/start every 30-45 seconds because of constant fouls for the slightest physical contact between the players. The only way to avoid it is slide-tackling!!!! True. You can't legitimately shoulder-barge regardless of how good you get but you can get good enough at slide-tackles to win the ball every time without commiting a foul.
- Almost impossible to dribble once you go to 4 stars or above with any player other than a consideration for FIFA World Player of the Year!
- Now almost impossible to win a header from corners with players 9 inches taller than their markers.
- Goalkeepers saving everything two-handed or they'll miss the ball.
- The slowest player in the game can catch up with Henry over a run of 30 yards even if they start 10 yards behind.
- Defense auto-clears with the same annoying frequency as "scripted" FIFA 2003/04.
- Long shots now as easy as the annoying FIFA 2003.
- Cheating by the CPU as bad as ever and complaints about this are rife among the gaming elite of the WE/PES series.
PROS
- Player models are way better than FIFAs. FIFA need to overall the graphics for the players. WE/PES have far superior faces and uniforms (where they have the license!)
- Ball physics superior to FIFA.
- Better framerate than FIFA for the PC meaning smoother gameplay.
This is the first year where FIFA have started to close the gap and the WE/PES series only has more animations to offer this year and improved faces because every other enahncement (except for the brilliant addition of snow) is a disaster especially the auto-sidestep, scripted auto-clearance additions. The atmosphere in the stadiums is truly bizarre with a handful of spectators to watch the world cup final (sorry, International Cup because they can't even get licenses to use the name of competitions!).
I'm bypassing PES5/WE9:I this year to play FIFA 2006 (especially on the X-Box 360 when it's out). I'm not alone in the complaints list for WE9, you can find a thread with over 600 posts complaining about the game on Evo-Web and confirmations of the other drawbacks all over PESFan or the Soccer Gaming PES/WE section.
