fair do's if you were english and prefered liverpool but that my friend, is a right touch.
I do prefer Liverpool to Brazil... if there's a Liverpool vs. Malaysia XI pre season match in a channel and Brazil vs. Germany in another one, I'll be watching Liverpool...

I'll just mention I was much happier when Liverpool won the CL than when Brazil won the WC... hell, even the Uefa cup in 2001 was more important to me than 1994 world cup win...

I guess it's hard to understand, but that's how I feel... call me whatever... fake supporter, anything.. I still like Liverpool more than I like Brazil (as football teams)

I like your post, but honestly- you dont like Brasil as a country?
The problems in Brasil are many and football makes us feel better and forget them for a second. The poorest of poor can be happy for at least a day. And that makes winning for the NT all the more important IMO. The NT is not THE country, but its our pride.

I lived in Brasil, true we dont wave our flag around, but c'mon...Brazilians have their national pride. I frankly think that countries shouldnt be so proudful (USA, France etc...)

I think if you are from that country and you are on the world stage (WC or Olympics) you should be proud that youre country has made such athletes. Be proud of what you have no matter what it is. Its not you up there, so dont hate them just because theyre there.

Im not saying forget the problems in our country, but we live in a "peaceful" country. When you dont die for your country you tend to have no pride for it. But Id rather have less flags waving, then a bigger cemetary.

I would prefer my country to QUALIFY for the World Cup over my club team winning the Libertadores or Champions Leauge. I think country is all about pride, and clubs are all about money, so I dont really get as hung up on it as I do my country. Of course Im usually set with Brasil, but whenever I watch a club team, I NEVER (no matter what game it is) get cold hands and a raised blood pressure. My club team never has made me run outside in the streets with a flag like my country.

I think the "4 years until the next tournament" is such a killer for me. If we dont qualify thats 4 years with another "world champion"! I almost died in 98 so repeating that is not something Id like to do.
That's a load of bs, I prefer my club over country anytime.

I love Brazil as a country... and that's why I dislike the National team... the fact that the people "feel better for a second" somehow makes them forget they have nothing to eat the next day, that their kids can't go to school because they have to work to help their parents' income... but it's all fine if we beat Argentina, or whoever... who cares if the unemployment is sky high, Ronaldo scored again last match and Brazil are through to the semis... if the national team someday don't qualify for the world cup then maybe they'll wake up and start to do something about it... like start paying atention to who they vote for...

I respect your opinion on how the NT may be your pride, but it certainly isn't for me... their attitude toward opponents when there's nothing at stake is ridiculous... much like you training your whole life to play basketball, for example against the USA, and then find out they let you win... hell, the proudest moment I have as a Brazilian sports fan has got to be 1987 Indianapolis win in basketball against the Americans, who had never lost at home by then... that also shows I like the Brazilian Olympic teams, all sports, except football...

the volleyball team dominates, though you don't see them look uninterested in court... you don't see players saying they're too tired... that's something to be proud of... not some players who want to stay at home to eat more pies like Ronaldo...

Robert Scheidt too.. he's like 8 times world champion, though you don't see a bad attitude toward his opponents...

I love it when some unknown sport gets some success... they struggle to get sponsors, yet give it their all when it comes to representing the country... football on the other hand will always have sponsors... and look at how many clubs there are... it comes to a point where we have olympic level athletes without sponsors and Roque Junior earning millions per year...

somehow people like to think that if I'm brazilian I have to love the football team, or I'm not brazilian "enough"... and that shows in your post too.... just to make it clear... I love the country, like its athletes, its sports... just not its football national team...

Yeah, country over club any day of the ******* week.

That's why I can never really have a deep hatred for Ajax opponents' players. Plus, Ajax has been pretty ****ty for the past 10 years or so :(

Kibe Kru, thanks for the thoughts!
Im not trying to imply youre less patriotic than I am...you ACTUALLY LIVE THERE! I guess I dont see Brasil "treating their opponents bad" like you say you do. I have a different view of the Ronaldo situation too. I mean...its not like these footballers just wake up good- they have to work hard- REALLY HARD to get to where they are. Harder than most places because 1. Brasil is poor and you have to really struggle through a lot to make it, and 2. Because there is more competition to be a footballer in Brasil than in any other nation.

It would be a stereotypical thing to say you were born Brazilian- now you can dribble 4 people. It takes hard work that they put in as much as any other athletes. Its something that the culture has produced, and for that you can be proud IMO. The soil of Rio didnt produce Romario- the culture and people on the beaches and parks did. Thats something only found in Brasil.

I dont think any other Brazilian athlete "works as much" either. I mean Ronaldo had la liga, Kings cup, CL, Pre season, then a Confederations Cup too? Its not like Brasil even needed him! One month brake in a 2 year period is not enough IMO. In the previous season Ronaldo only had a month off. So if he played in the Confederations Cup he wouldnt have gotten a brake then he would have to play in the WC. Its not like theyre lazy (well Ronaldo is lazy on the field, but thats how he plays- He's leading scorer in SA WCQ) or arrogant. They just choose their dates so to become successful. Something has to be working for Brasil to be where it is now.

I agree with what you said about the country as a whole. That is new light to me, and thanks for making me think. I still say theres room to be proud about your local football club- which happens to be the most successful team in the world: CBF. I dont think the football is to blame for the bad politics in Brasil.

Oh well... I guess you don't remember the friendlies we play... almost every friendly the nt plays like it's the last thing they'd want to be doing... I remember a friendly against China, it was a draw if I remember correctly... we didn't run, we didn't fight... is that showing respect? if I ever managed to play one on one with Michael Jordan I'd prefer losing 1000-0 than winning because he didn't want to play, or he felt sorry or anything... and if footballers have to work hard, at least they get the reward for doing so... I mean.. who doesn't have to work hard these days? people work their arses off for a whole damn month to earn R$300, which is little more than U$100... but they never complain, do they? they also don't ask for a week to rest for fear of being fired... NT players play 1, 2 matches a week and earn more in that week than the average worker earns in a decade...
Sure there is more competition to be a footballer in Brazil than other places... though that's not necessarily a good thing... way too many kids drop out of school to try to become a top footballer... and possibly end up with no education, no football career, no job... no life, sadly... the amount of clubs in Brazil is big enough though... there are around 800 clubs registered at the CBF, and about 13k amateur ones... if you consider only the registered, that's at least 16000 players, not counting u-18s, u-15s and other categories... that means if you're half talented, enough to consider playing football professionally, you'll most likely find a place somewhere...

About Brazil not needing Ronaldo, it's not up to him to decide... if he was called up, he is necessary... if you're called to represent your nation for anything, if you're proud of it, you go...

about the bad politics... football isn't directly to blame... though it's surely indirectly linked to it... not few times have I heard people complain about their lack of job opportunities, crime, violence, bent cops... and then say "at least the seleção is winning", making it look like if the seleção is good, all is good... I don't think that the elections are in world cup years just because of a coincidence...

I understand that everyone here has PRIDE in thier country. BUT what I really hate about the World Cup Nowadays is how Brazilians, Africans, Germans, etc etc etc PLAY for other countries instead of thier own because they cannot break into thier own national side...... Thats almost like cheating man...... International football is great BUT its not better than Club IMO....... 1 Month of football and thats it.... knockout stages to determine a WORLD CHAMP???????? more like LUCK to me.......

I think its great to enjoy international football but it is OVERRATED like a mofo......

Heh people is mad because Bilos could go and play for Croatia, and they say "don't let it happen like with Trezeguet and Camoranesi", but in my opinion Bilos is not needed so if he wants he can go and play for Croatia.

If Argentina wouldn't qualify to the world cup well i would watch the world cup but wouldn't go for any team probably.

Club over country. In NT players almost dont know each other as they only train together from time to time; so i think it can be hardly known as a team; whereas a club moves much more information and plays a lot of matches along the year, so its much more interesting to follow.

I agree. But thats no reason to hate the NT. That a reason to hate the culture.

to me that's a reason to hate the NT... someday people will realize they have more important stuff than winning world cups... and that'll be when the NT gets too lame to get to world cup...

like every football manager will tell you, when you win, you forget the mistakes your team made... and it's like that when Brazil wins their football matches... I don't think it's a cultural thing... if another nation were so passionate about football, they'd be doing the same mistake... look at Argentina 78..... while the people was entertained by the world cup, the government was free to do whatever they wanted...

What you say is true, the exact same thing happens in Argentina. For me, the day in which we no longer are a good footballing nation will be the day in which I will realize that we are moving forward as a country. There are a lot of kids in Argentina (I imagine the same thing happens in Brasil) that drop out of school or look to football as the only salvation to their grim future. They have the added pressure of their entire family on their back to become successful which is pretty sad, because only a very small percentage of the population can ever become a good football player. You look at other countries that do not have as many good football players and in a way that is due to the fact that children are out all day in school studying and maybe play football for a few hours a day or maybe a couple times a week. In many places in Argentina (and even more in Brasil I imagine) children play football from sunrise to sunset and that is the only thing that they have in their life. They do not study, they do not work, just play football....and frankly, that scares me....

I also love it when another sport that is not football does well, like the National Basketball team in the Olympics. Or when a player that is not only "Maradona" becomes famous, like Ginobili for example...

Well at least you`re a regular WC qualifier . . .

I got the same **** here, children playing football anywhere from sunset to sunrise, but we never qualify :(

of course, I just said Argentina because it's the first one that came to my mind, though Italy 34 is much better as an example...
but it goes back to ancient history, so it really can't be a cultural thing... "panis et circensis"... without the "panis" bit, at least in Brazil.....
