as an assistant to our lecturer, i'm reading "how to cope with horny co-workers" written by Hassan Oramahi. its a local book in Malayan translation.

Judging from the name of the author, I'm going to assume the tips in this book include "don't lead them on" and "avoid flirting by avoiding conversation".

I have a pretty impressive queue built up right now. I've started on the top book tonight and I'm going to just plow through these. Wouldn't surprise me if I finish them all in under a month; hell, maybe in 2 weeks.

A Hero of Our Time - Lermontov
The Sun Also Rises - Hemingway
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - Thompson
Light in August - Faulkner
The Picture of Dorian Gray - Wilde
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man - Joyce

Anyone read any stuff by Bukowski? Would you recommend him?

GOD YES! Criminally underrated. On any given day, he can easily pass as being my favorite writer....poetry or prose....doesn't matter.

I'd start with these...

http://www.amazon.com/Notes-Dirty-O...=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1287815386&sr=1-1

http://www.amazon.com/Run-Hunted-Charles-Bukowski-Reader/dp/0060924586

and then slowly work your way into his short stories, novels and finally, his poems....which contain his best work of all. He was such an unbelievably prolific writer, so I wouldn't really know where to concretely direct you, but I highly recommend 'em, man.

Barfly, Ham on rye, Factotum, Post Office...all legendary books imo. The movie adaptations of barfly and factotum are also fantastic...especially Barfly since Mickey Rourke puts forth his greatest performance in that movie. Matt Dillon also puts in an award worthy performance in Factotum, but I've always been very partial towards 'em.

It really bums me out that I'm such a lazy, slow reader, because I've got more than a dozen of his works within an arm's reach of me and I've only maybe completed four of his books and two of his poetry collections....of course I've perused through all of 'em, but that's such a hollow and entirely unsatisfying way to consume such a great's work, man

what a rugged beast!!

im envious. FALILV is one of those books that I came across at a very favorable and pivotal phase of my youth when I was in junior year in high school and it was such a crucial book for me interms of developing and broadening my outlook on quite a few aspects of life. It truly left an indelible mark on me, man. It also not only discouraged, but completely extinguished my aspirations of ever becoming a writer, much like those AND1 streetball videos derailed my hopes of being the Black Pistol Pete.

There was a period in my life from the 12th grade to first year uni, that me and two of my best buddies would watch the movie every other month or so.

your post has inspired me to view the flick again since I havent watched it in like 2yrs, and perhaps, I might even listen to the audiobook aswell......

get ahold of that before you start reading FALILV.........

Mandieta6

Red Card - Life
Life Ban
Just finished Rant - Chuck Palahniuk, and out of the Chuck books that I've read, this one takes the cake. I've never read a book written in this style (oral biography) and it makes for an easy read, especially when I only get around to reading it on my down time. Very entertaining, and just brilliant, I am in love with this man's work.

I feel obligated to tell you this:

I absolutely hated the book. It's boring and I just plain hated reading it. Every page after the first couple chapters were an absolute chore. First couple chapters I thought were funny enough, but after that the book just went on and on and got more and more boring. Honestly thought it was a waste of my time to finish it and even considered just quitting before finishing.

as a part of our educational task, we have to read some controversial book. so i picked Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie. any thoughts......

Never read it and probably never will, but probably interesting if for nothing other than the ****storm it kicked up. I would have probably picked The Bell Curve.

Currently reading A Brief History of Time when I'm at work. Going to hit the next book on my list, whatever it was, for leisure reading.

I'm on to Light in August by William Faulkner and I must say, he is the best English language author I have ever read. Not sure if he's Tolstoy or Dostoevsky, but dude is incredible. I HIGHLY recommend this book, and if what I've been told is any indication, any book that he has written.

hi guys, last night was the first time i read the Hustler magazine (Jan 2011 edition). my cyber friend just sent me on PDF format. some of the articles and cartoons are sarcastic and seems to contain racism materials. were there ever happen that people complain and drag them over some trials or whatever?

if you dont mind, pls share your thoughts....

Finished Light in August, finished Portrait of the Artist.

Next two are: Absalom! Absalom! and David Copperfield. Probably will read the Faulkner first.
