Everton deputy chairman Bill Kenwright has hailed teen talent Wayne Rooney as "the greatest thing around in football".
The 16-year-old striker is being touted by Evertonians as their answer to Michael Owen.
Rooney has been the undoubted star of Everton's pre-season campaign and he has scored seven goals in three games, including two hat-tricks.
Even the normally-taciturn David Moyes has let himself get carried away and the Blues boss claims Rooney can be the best player in the club's history.
Kenwright is just as excited about Rooney and he claims it will be difficult for Everton to play down his talent.
"I did a radio interview yesterday and I tried to play down Rooney, but you can't play down Rooney," he said.
"How can you play down the greatest thing around in football?
"He will make an impact this season and I hope he does.
"You have to try to protect him from us, our fans and our hopes, but we have a great manager and I hope he will get that point across."
Rooney, who is not 17 until October, is set to become Everton's youngest player since a certain Joe Royle first pulled on their blue shirt and Moyes has said he will be part of his first-team plans in the new season.
What do you think?
I think he's a very good player already and can only improve with age.
The important thing is for us to hold onto him for as long as possible!
