Everton deputy chairman Bill Kenwright has hailed teen talent Wayne Rooney as "the greatest thing around in football".

The 16-year-old striker is being touted by Evertonians as their answer to Michael Owen.

Rooney has been the undoubted star of Everton's pre-season campaign and he has scored seven goals in three games, including two hat-tricks.

Even the normally-taciturn David Moyes has let himself get carried away and the Blues boss claims Rooney can be the best player in the club's history.

Kenwright is just as excited about Rooney and he claims it will be difficult for Everton to play down his talent.

"I did a radio interview yesterday and I tried to play down Rooney, but you can't play down Rooney," he said.

"How can you play down the greatest thing around in football?

"He will make an impact this season and I hope he does.

"You have to try to protect him from us, our fans and our hopes, but we have a great manager and I hope he will get that point across."

Rooney, who is not 17 until October, is set to become Everton's youngest player since a certain Joe Royle first pulled on their blue shirt and Moyes has said he will be part of his first-team plans in the new season.

What do you think?

I think he's a very good player already and can only improve with age.

The important thing is for us to hold onto him for as long as possible!

yeah well I saw a bit of him in Everton's first game of the season ... and the youngster looked very impressive !!! considering he's only 16 years old .. he has power speed and eagerness ...

looks like he's already a star on Merseyside

Looks impressive, but even if he does have a stinker of a match he should be left alone, because for god's sake he's only 17.

He needs a run in the team, although he also need to be protected against burnout. Moyes need to be very careful with a talent such as this.

FYI: he's only 16:) ;) Anyway he looks like great talent for the future, he played well on his debut at the start of the season

He's 17 in October. That's where I think he'll have a long run in the team. At the moment he's still being wrapped a bit in cotton wool, I feel.

WENGER HAILS EVERTON GEM ROONEY

Stunned Arsene Wenger hailed wonderboy Wayne Rooney as the greatest prospect in English football after the 16 year-old had ended Arsenal's record breaking unbeaten league run with a stunning 30-yarder.

Gunners boss Wenger said: "He is the biggest England talent I've seen since I arrived in England.

"There has certainly not been an under 20 player as good as him since I became a manager here.

"We were beaten by a special goal from a very special talent.

"I've seen a bit of him in recent months, his couple of goals on TV in the Worthington Cup, and when he came on to do so well at Manchester United recently.

"But you do not need to be an expert to see that he is a special talent, very special."

The above is Taken from an article on 4thegame.com

I just had to bring this up again... he is a SUPERSTAR who will only improve with age

I think he has the potential to become a great player, but to be honest with you I don't think English coaches will bring the best out of him, just like what is happeneing to Owen. I know that sounds abit harsh, but if he was to go and learn his trade abroad he would be better off. No point of him learning in the long ball way. I think if Owen was to go to Spain he will become a much better player, just like Macca did. I think more English players need to be encouraged to go abroad, escpecially young talents like Wayne Rooney. Other leagues in europe concerntrate on keeping the ball, not always hitting that long ball on the counter. The game has moved on, The English coaches need to aswell.

In Australia there is a publication called British Football Weekly (produced in Western Australia)

This came out on Tuesday way before the game and on P12-13 there is a write-up about both Arsenals unbeaten record on one side and A young talent from Everton (Roonery derrr:crazyboy: ) on the other here are some quotes:

"Confident Arsene Wenger believes his Champions are good enough to go through the season without even one premiership defeat" (oops).

Prediction for Everton match: Arsenal to quell the Toffee's rugged, belligerent approach with cool defending and slick breakaway football in a 2-0 win (oops again  ).

ROONEY TIME
WR is arguably the most talked about young English striker since M.Owen emergence from Liverpool.....

talks about breaking records with his age, growing up in Liverpool, Munich, Milan and Madrid have had interest in him for next year.... Is a professional sledger (gives out more than he gets) He is a talent who could help transform Evertons fortunes

Yeah, and then maybe like McManaman, he'd never get picked to play for England. ;)

That's not Macca's fault, he deserves to play for England. He has better technical ability than almost anyone playing for England. It's England's fault because hardly no English players leave the country and look at when Sven was hired.

Maybe so, but Owen needs to beter himself as a player, his all round game is poor, all he can do these days is just finish at the end of a pass, thats his only contribution to most games. He has the potential to become better, and improve his techinical abilty. English coaches are not helping him.

Macca didn't go to the world cup simply because he refused to play the long ball, he wanted to keep it on the ground, which most English players are not capable of. I don't know any other English player with technical ability like Macca, English players should follow his pattern. They shouldn't think of the England team, they should think about making themselves better as players.

When Owen first burst on the scene, he was always willing to dribble with the ball, if only the English coaches let him keep that part of his game.

I've seen Rooney play a few minutes now, and he's looked really impressive. As long as he keeps improving (not that he needs to improve to become a fantastic player), he'll be in the England team before we know it. Is he another Gazza?
