Maybe so, but Owen needs to beter himself as a player, his all round game is poor, all he can do these days is just finish at the end of a pass, thats his only contribution to most games. He has the potential to become better, and improve his techinical abilty. English coaches are not helping him.

Macca didn't go to the world cup simply because he refused to play the long ball, he wanted to keep it on the ground, which most English players are not capable of. I don't know any other English player with technical ability like Macca, English players should follow his pattern. They shouldn't think of the England team, they should think about making themselves better as players.

When Owen first burst on the scene, he was always willing to dribble with the ball, if only the English coaches let him keep that part of his game.

I too think McManaman is an excellent player who should be in England's starting 11 (somewhere) but I think you are being too stereotypical about English players and the England national team - this isn't the 80s anymore and it's not all about the long ball anymore. Look at Liverpool & United - two teams with several English players in the starting 11 - both teams play with the ball mostly on the floor.

About Owen's overall play - you should watch some more Liverpool matches - even when he wasn't scoring earlier in the season Michael Owen was very involved in the general attacking play and got several assists. Sure he's no Raul and won't come far back into the midfield to start the play but he's not a one trick pony who just runs fast like 99% of the people on this forum make him out to be. And he has improved his game quite a bit - remember he's only 22 - and a few years ago the big knock on him was that a) he can't head the ball & b) he has no left foot - well he's scoring more and more goals in the air now, and in two of his last matches for Liverpool he's scored with his weaker foot and scored several with his left peg last season. He's only going to get better, and I think it's down to coaches like Houllier & Eriksson helping his development - not hindering it.
