Uefa sets foreign player limits

Uefa sets foreign player limits

Uefa has announced clubs competing in the Champions League and Uefa Cup will have to include four homegrown players in their 25-man squad from 2006.
Europe's governing body also wants to implement the plan in domestic leagues but that will have to be agreed by each national association.

Uefa then wants six homegrown players by 2007 and eight in 2008.

Of the eight, at least four must be trained by the club's own academy and the rest from the home country.

Uefa defines a club-trained player as one who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21.

Of the 32 sides in last season's Champions League, five clubs would have not had enough homegrown players.

They are: Arsenal, Chelsea, Celtic, Rangers and Ajax.

Uefa's 52 member associations will vote on whether the same rule should apply to domestic competitions at a Congress in Tallinn, Estonia in April.

There has already been strong opposition voiced by the Premier League and the Italian federation.

I think this is a good rule. Teams like Chelsea will actually have to train their own players instead of buying everyone.

might be a bit harsh on teams like Celtic and Rangers where frankly there isnt much home grown talent, or at least up to CL or Uefa Cup standard.

There were more than 4 Scots in the Rangers Squad...

This is in violation of EU laws.

Watch the big clubs challenge this, watch UEFA pap it and back down.

Plus, the commie revolution has started at Hearts (H)

Wow...Ajax...Not so long ago,Ajax was the club with the most promising homegrown players....
Anyway,I guess it's a fair decision that might bridge the huge gap in European football scene.

they should have never let it get to the state it's in now, clubs these days just don't have the same character they used to.

What were the Old Firm Squads for last season's CL?

I'm not sure either would have had 4 Scots developed by themselves.

Were all these in the Gers squad?

Burke, Malcolm, Ross, McGregor and Hughes?

What about Celtic?

Did they include Wallace, Beattie, Marshall, Kennedy and Maloney

I'm doubtful about that!!

About time they did something like these.. it doesnt say anything about nationalities.. just that they have to be from the youth academy teams

This won't change much. It said 25 man roster, not starting lineup, so teams can just fill roster spots with players that will meet the quota, but wont play.

They should make a rule where you need 6 home grown players from the start. Although, this would probably force Arsenal to forfeit all CL games.

No they wont because like it said, in 2008 4 will have to be from the teams own academy. And 4 have to be from there own country. Great idea, Chelsea will have to start investing in youth development now. Where as man utd alreeady have that :mrpimp:
