I think you may have the rose tinted glasses on......... Meireles has been a decent presence but creatively pretty poor and squandered lots of attacking chances, and Veloso I think has been a noticeably bad performer....... his shooting and delivery has been abysmal, he hasn't shielded the back four particularly well and he hasnt really started many moves from deep or defended set pieces well.

I'm impressed by Portugal discipline in midfield and defense. I think Veloso-Meirales-Moutinho do well in midfield in terms of battles and possession, they make lots of space and chances for forwards.

Zis.

They're not that type of player either so makes sense. Meireles in Chelsea plays way differently in the NT cause Paulo Bento says so.

SWAG MASTER PAULO BENTO you guys have to deal with it.

Portugal its actually better than England, we've passed the group of death and we were unlucky with Germany
Beat Spain in the semi finals, then I'll be impressed.

At least we havent lost any games yet. And we won our group. And beating Czech 1-0 isnt exactly a result you write home to your mothers about. And Rooney hasn't even got his trousers off yet.

If Portugal win this tournament does that mean Ronaldo overtakes Messi as the best player in the world?

No, but he deserve the Ballon d'or

Portugal showed more in group stage then England nevertheless they have lost. They passed The Group of Death after all, and with better attacker they would be much more dangerous. Against Italy will England show their real face, good or bad, but I believe they will pass and play against Germany in semi's.

This.

It's kinda weird talking about their battle for the title of the best, as I feel it's kind of hard to argue with words why Messi is better. When you just talk of their abilities, it seems like Ronaldo is better - taller, better header, better with both feet. But when you see Messi, you see something you can't really describe. It's just pure magic, art. Ronaldo is an athlete, Messi is a footballer.

I don't think it's indescribable. His short quick strides give him the gift of changing directions faster than other players can react. Ronaldo is a long strider and therefore much more predictable. His first touch is also better and he is less selfish.

But what you say is true, Ronaldo is better on paper, he SEEMS like he's better even though I think it's clear to everyone that he is not. I know back in 2009 I said something like "Messi does a few things better than Ronaldo, but Ronaldo does a LOT of things better than Messi." It's still true, but the few things Messi does better are more important. Those short strides are why he's such a good dribbler though. Players that shifty, small, fast, and skilled don't come around often... in fact I don't know if there's ever been one before. Maradona I guess.

I agree. But England has gone through the group stage without their best player: Rooney. Well he played the last game but really displayed a sub-par performance by his standards.

Imagine Portugal without Ronaldo in 2 of the group stage matches. Inexperienced Welbeck has been leading the attack. Imagine Portugal with Quaresma instead of Ronaldo for 2 of the games.

They're both offensive players but with different styles of play. Its kind of unfair to compare them i guess. Of course Messi has that characterist style of managing the ball and ill probably say more "WOOW OMG" things watching Messi than Ronaldo but still Ronaldo is such more versatile than Messi. Messi is excelent doing what we are used too watch and specially in Barcelona with his team surrounding him. Im not seeing Messi scoring a goal like Ronaldo did yesterday, but the thing is.... Messi doesnt need to do that (i know that he scored goals with his head, one of them won the CL, i know i know, so dont bash me), thats why is unfair to compare them i guess.

I really like Ronaldo but i confess that i dont like the way Real Madrid plays with him. But im a confessed fan of the way Ferguson worked with him in Manchester.
