Like I said earlier, he missed the ball and tried to pull out... there was no intention to hurt anyone. With the first incident, he still didn't intend to hurt anyone, it definitely deserved a yellow card, but there was no direct intent to injure anyone.
The second challenge, in a smaller game, would have deserved a yellow card because it was careless, but because of it's hype, the referee, if he were good, would have pulled Del Horno aside, had a word with him, calmed him down, because he should have been on a yellow already, and let the game go on. But no, no yellow for the first challenge, and then a straight red, for a little bump...
