Lazio (Y) - well done

Parma :S - they got through (barely), but they showed today their priorities this season (a B side, with Gilardino being rested)

Udinese :f***: - They dominated the game from start to finish (according to match reports ive read). This is a Great side, and i felt they could really make an impact this season. There elimination really disapointed me, cause i guarentee they will give Juve a hard time this weekend, yet cant beat an average greek team. Anybody who regularly follows Serie A/Udine will agree they are a great side and this is a shame.

Two Italian sides in Uefa Cup, well at least theyre doing very well in CL (and you can guess which i care more about:D)

I don't know, UEFA's site didn't go into detail about it.

Group stage
From 2004/05, two qualifying rounds are staged each over two legs to find the 40 clubs which advance to the group stage. This comprises eight groups of five, with two home and two away matches per club. The winners, runners-up and third-placed clubs from each group advance to the last 32 where they are joined with the eight third-placed clubs from the UEFA Champions League. At this point, the traditional two-match format is used with the exception of the single-match final.

Starting XI
I Expected these clubs to move onto the next round:
Steaua, Schalke 04, Heerenveen, Stuttgart, Partizan, Zaragoza, Sochaux, Besiktas, Lille, Dinamo Zagreb, Parma, AEK, Brugge, Feyenoord, Auxerre, Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Sporting, Benfica, Lazio, Sevilla, Rangers, Athletic Bilbao, Villarreal, Aachen, Basel

These teams I did not expect:
Dinamo Tblisi, Egaleo, Panionios, AZ, Standard

These I thought had ties that could have gone either way:
Dnipro, Amica, Grazer AK, Ferencvaros, Utrecht, Austria Vienna, Hearts, Zenit, Beveren

That sounds a bit confusing. 3 teams will advance from each group, that means that 24 out of the 40 teams that have made it to the group stage will advance to the 3rd round where they will be joined by 8 more teams who have finished 3rd in their respective groups in CL so all that makes up 32 teams for the 3rd round which will be head-to-head. So saying the "last 16" could create some confusion even though I knew you just meant to say last 16 games not teams but I just couldn't resist.

from soccernet.com

LONDON, Oct 1 (Reuters) - Italian club Lazio, England's Newcastle United and Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart are among the top group of seeds for Tuesday's UEFA Cup group draw.
The inaugural UEFA Cup group stage was brought in to boost the profile of Europe's second tier club competition which had struggled to compete with the Champions League.

The 40 teams who qualified on Thursday have been divided into five seeding pools of eight with a team from each pool going into the eight groups of five when the draw is made in Switzerland. Teams from the same country will be separated.

The top pool of seeds also includes former winners Parma, who beat Slovenia's Maribor 3-2 on aggregate but are bottom of Serie A, AEK Athens, Club Bruges, Rangers and Feyenoord.

Last year's semi-finalists Villarreal are in the second group of seeds which also includes Auxerre and Schalke 04, who demolished Latvia's Liepajas Metalurg 9-1 over two legs.

Each club play two matches at home and two away in the group stage.

The winners, runners-up and third-placed sides advance to the last 32 where they will be joined by the eight third-placed clubs from the Champions League group stage. The competition then becomes two-legged knockout again.

The final takes place on May 18 at the Jose Alvalade Stadium, home of Sporting Lisbon, who are in the second pot of seeds.

Pot 1 - Lazio, Parma, Feyenoord, Newcastle United, AEK Athens, VfB Stuttgart, Club Bruges, Rangers.

Pot 2 - Villarreal, Auxerre, Schalke 04, Sporting, Real Zaragoza, Besiktas, Benfica, Lille.

Pot 3 - Athletic Bilbao, Sevilla, Dinamo Zagreb, Basel, Sochaux, Middlesbrough, Utrecht, Graz AK.

Pot 4 - Partizan Belgrade, Steaua Bucharest, Hearts, Heerenveen, Alemannia Aachen, Amica Wronki, Panionios, Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk.

Pot 5 - Ferencvaros, Standard Liege, Egaleo, AZ Alkmaar, Zenit St. Petersburg, Beveren, Austria Vienna, Dinamo Tbilisi.

Imagine if Sporting got to the final, lol.

PS: I hope Steaua get some good teams in their group so that we can prove our European value :mrpimp:

Rememeber Feyenoord did it in 2002

The competition is open enough that they could do it, but i think Feyenoord had a better chance of doing it when they did than Sporting doing it.

Ohh but also imagine te possibility of Benfica getting there? Would Sporting fans go to the match to boo?

I tip AZ, Middlesborough, Newcastle and Sporting. That's before all the #3 CL teams join the fray.
