isnt it a group phase this time? anyways, this competition doesnt really get started until the 3rd place CL teams are added.

Either way, i have little interest anyways cause Italian sides just dont give a sh*t about this competition.

I'm pretty sure there's a new rule saying 3rd placed CL teams do NOT go to the UEFA Cup...

Yeah, that's why several UEFA Cups in the 90's were won by Italian teams....:|

Group stage
From 2004/05, two qualifying rounds are staged each over two legs to find the 40 clubs which advance to the group stage. This comprises eight groups of five, with two home and two away matches per club. The winners, runners-up and third-placed clubs from each group advance to the last 32 where they are joined with the eight third-placed clubs from the UEFA Champions League. At this point, the traditional two-match format is used with the exception of the single-match final.

Knock-out format
For two-legged matches in the knock-out phase, the club scoring the greater aggregate of goals qualifying for the next round. In the event of both teams scoring the same number of goals, the team which scores more goals away qualifies. If this proves inconclusive, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes is played after the second match. If during extra time both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double (ie. the visiting team advances). If no goals are scored during extra-time, the winner is decided by penalty kicks.

in recent seasons Italian sides have fielded weakened teams in this competition. Im not happy about it. Look at Roma last season, Cassano was often a sub and i dont Totti even played a game the whole campaign (and he was healthy).

I might be wrong, but if i remember correctly, Inter didnt field great sides in the competition either.

I hardly can believe that Inter or Roma wanted to be eliminated........

higher priorities.

Inter was trying to get 4th CL spot.

Roma was in scudetto race.

and valioso. i looked up roma-villareal, first leg Totti wasnt in lineup, and cassano started on bench, they lost 2-0

Dellas, Zotti, tomassi and carew all started and they were all reserves for the most part last season.

leg two roma played with there best 11 (with Totti and Cassano) and won 2-1.

why are you guys even debating? this was a story in italy last season. Im not making this up, i wish it wasnt true, but it is.

Totti didn't play the UEFA Cup ,which doesn't prove your point ,Mikey. The superior ( ) Italian teams didn't field weaker squads because they had higher priorities ,they did it because they underestimated their opponents.

Anyway ,I am hoping Dinamo Zagreb can go thru to the next rnd but it is doubtful because they have awesome ,but young and unexperienced players and they recently fired their coach so things are looking (N) :kader:

Well, I hope we can make it into the group stages - it would be absolutely HUGE if we could. :( Imagine the bounces! (H)

Good luck to all teams concerned in this tournament. (H)(Y)

I guess thats a lot of matches, right ?

2 rounds (4 matches) + Groupstage with 5 teams (8 matches) + Playoffs (8 matches) + The Final (1 match) = 21 matches !!

I hope are 21 matches, more matches more fun :)

But i think is kinda stupid to do a group stage with 40 teams, if 32 of them reach playoffs (i know that groupstage will do seedings, but...) Anyway I think UEFA Cup is gonna be more funny this year :)

I think the Group stage is only 4 matches. You don't play home & away to everyone. You play 2 games at home to teams A & C and two games on the road to teams B & D.
