UEFA investigates fix claims

UEFA has opened an investigation into allegations of match-fixing surrounding the UEFA Cup Group D match between Greek side Panionios NFC and Georgia's FC Dinamo Tbilisi on Wednesday.

European football's governing body said today that it was launching its investigation on the basis of media reports in connection with the match, which Panionios won 5-2 at the Nea Smyrni stadium in Athens.

In announcing the investigation, a UEFA spokesman said that he was unable to disclose details of the investigation. "However, if it was proven that one of the clubs, through its players or officials has been involved in fixing the game, sanctions would be severe," he added.
UEFA principles
Article 5 of the UEFA disciplinary regulations - Principles of conduct - states that member associations and clubs as well as their players, officials and members, must conduct themselves according to the principles of loyalty, integrity and sportsmanship
Breaching of principles
These principles are breached by anyone who, among other things, engages in or attempts to engage in active or passive bribery, or whose conduct brings the sport of football, and UEFA in particular, into disrepute.
Possible measures
UEFA would be entitled to take a number of measures. These include heavy fines, the exclusion of a club from international competitions for several seasons, or the banning of individuals from any function related to football.
