Graham Poll:

Italian referee Nicola Rizzoli came up with a baffling decision early in the second half when Manuel Neuer clashed with Gonzalo Higuain.

The Germany goalkeeper had every right to go for the ball with his fist, made a clean connection and his follow-through was natural. He inadvertently cleaned out Higuain but there was no case for a penalty.

For some observers it may have brought back memories of West German goalkeeper Harald Schumacher’s awful challenge on Patrick Battiston of France in a 1982 semi-final (above). But it was nothing like it for dangerous play.

However, why Rizzoli decided to award Germany a free-kick was a mystery.
A throw-in to Argentina would have been the right choice.

I found it funny. Either way it's not a foul. Neuer went for the ball, Higuain was collateral damage.

He looked like a rag doll.

Anyway, the Argentine's can't even begin to legitimately complain because they could have easily had 2 or 3 players sent off is the ref wasn't a pussy and/or incompetent.

Higuain came in late and did not win the ball. Keepers are allowed to do this all the time and are specifically protected in the rules.

False, using the knee to protect themselves is faul and red card. Ask our ref Mus.

It's borderline either way, definitely no red though and definitely no foul by higuain seeing as he didn't even look at Neuer once, neuer maybe could and should have done more not to leave his leg in but in a world cup final you are never going to punish that

how's he doing?

gonna go with shot off the post from a teammate that rebounds to hit him in the shins and goes in ...

I'm happy to hear he didn't play at full throttle ... if he puts in a stellar performance against an English team after a World Cup like that, it'll be the wrong partner of the Fenway Sports Group who lands him ... but this way, it's still Roma -- and not Liverpool -- who are more keen on him ... He played for like half an hour, and didn't really stand out. I honestly don't get all this hype around him.

he's the USA's breakout star from the World Cup ... if you weren't impressed, so be it ... I don't know where else you're seeing "hype", but after a seminal World Cup, people in the States are naturally buzzing about potentially seeing an American starter in the Champions League, and he's the best shot right now ... at Roma, I think he'd get that chance ...

We haven't had the best luck with fullbacks, he's the best we've had in awhile so we're really excited about him.

Fullback is 98% lungs and 2% skill. Yedlin will be just fine. His effort was tremendous and he can play for a good club.

Disagree, I think we've done extremely well with fullbacks, all things considered. Cherundolo was a model international, and our best player in 2002 (best finish ever) was unquestionably Tony Sanneh. In fact, Tony Sanneh was so incredible in 2002 for the US that an 18 year old Shifty*my's eyes were opened to the possibilities of the position.
