No player is bigger than the club. Sure there are players that you associate with a particular club, players that have spent a long time there and you just cannot imagine them playing for another club. Those players become icons of the club, just like the stadium and the history of the club. The boardroom figures may come and go but thats not so important to us. Players are a much different thing, I understand that.
Peter Osgood was my boyhood hero. He to me WAS Chelsea. He made his debut is 1964, and in 1974, after falling out with the then manager Dave Sexton, was sold to Southampton. This after 380 appearences and 150 goals for the club.
I remember the demonstrations by the fans outside Sramford Bridge. We formed a picket line outside the Bridge in protest and left the board in no doubt how angry we were. Leaving Chelsea was not Peter's decision so the parrallels with the Shevchenko situation differ in this respect, but even so, i do understand the agonies that Milan fans must feel over his departure.
The point is this though. I thought at the time that Chelsea could go to hell. Of course I remained a firm supporter even if it did take a few years for me to calm down.
Then as time went on, Chelsea produced other icons. Kerry Dixon, Mark Hughes, Pat Nevin and Ray Wilkins, come to mind, and of course later on players like Zola, Gianluca Vialli, Shifty Petrescu, Roberto Di Matteo, Gus Poyet and Dennis Wise. Now we have Lampard, Terry and Cole and the list is growing as the seasons pass.
Eidur Gudjohnsson and Billy Gallas are worshipped at Chelsea. We never imagined them playing anywhere else EVER. Now we find that Eidur and Billy want to move on, through their own choice. We will not give them a hard time over the moves. As dissapointed as we are, these guys have the right to decide what they want in life. We as fans, have no right to dictate to them or condemn them for their decisions.
We will always remember our Legends with gratitude and love, and remember only the joy they gave to us all when they played for Chelsea. I believe that's the way it should be. Anything else seems to me, like an obsessive disorder that requires medical help.
You will not find a crazier Blues fan than me but I'll tell you this, My club will never be more important than the people around me that I love and cherish. My partner and my kids in particular. THEY are the reason that i live, not my football club. Some people need to get their priorities in order.
