Actually he could, because Whoscored says for example Rafinha, Alaba and Lahm can all play CB. So it's not as restrictive as it sounds...we had an example earlier with Evra for Xaviesta.

Why do you think it's better to have a complete starting 11 instead of being able to use the full 18 picks to achieve that (as long as you have at least 5 defenders in total, 2gk etc... in the end of it all)?

If people want to be strategic with their picks then I don't see a problem with that.

I'm not asking for myself, I'm just curious. I've been planning to have a complete XI with the first 11 picks.

It's part of the fun and the challenge, to achieve a coherent 11 with 11 potential starters of their respective NTs. Otherwise you'd be simply selecting a squad with little lineup and formation concerns.
Then there's the subs part, where you have to carefully select your picks because if you happen to take a player whose team is eliminated in the group stage you're kind of fucked. This represents yet another big challenge, where luck is also going to play a big factor of course.

Anyway this system worked fine back in 2014 and is fair enough for everyone, also I'm already used to it which makes it easier for me to run. The less hassle the better...

But Massive, I wasn't talking about having unrealistic formations, just about being able to pick your starting player with your 18th pick if you wished.

It's not a big deal.

Its hard because i have no idea how 90% of teams will line up, not even know the official squads.

Probability of starting is the #1 thing I'm looking for. On paper my team won't look like the strongest because of this. But in this draft it doesn't matter how good of a team you have, as long as your players fit and they get points.

I got you, and think I basically explained why in the other post. Also the urgency to get your starters in ASAP wouldn't be the same...

Anyway, no need to complicate this...let's carry on.

Xaviesta complaining earlier about how slow this is going (H)

Yes ...
that for starting 11 and I guess chance of cup progress for subs ...

Everyone is doing that (or is supposed to), and that's the hard part to achieve. I am pretty sure all of the players in my 11 will be starters for their respective NT's because I've done my homework, like everyone that intends to get a good score should.

Exactly.
One should look for subs that are potential starters too, and there might be a few available.

Ideally the selection rounds would've started only after all the squads were announced and the subs rounds would be done after the group stage was over, but obviously there's no way we'd make that work because of how slow the picks usually go.

Guerreiro is an excellent pick, taking his first steps in the NT but already a certainty for the future. It was between Fuchs and him really, decided for Christian because he has no competition in Austria (Alaba plays in midfield) whereas a certain player will fight for Raphael's spot. I hope he starts though, adds so much offensively.

Was hoping to get him as one of my subs

I must confess I didn't read the rules properly, I assumed some how that subs came in each round of games for players who didn't play that round like in fantasy football.

I don't know if Ginter was a good pick, most football writers seem to thinks he's a better RB than Can but that Low may stay loyal to Can anyway, but I am assuming Ginter could also easily come in as a sub and Can move to midfield if they need to switch things up in a game?

Also just checking - can I change my formation when I bring subs on? So let's say I play Ginter as DMC as whoscored says I can, and pick another RB, but my RB gets eliminated in the groups, can I move Ginter to RB and bring on a midfielder from my bench?

Ginter's a better RB imo. edit: oops!

I'd like to know that about switching formations and roles as well. Ginter in that way could be a great pick since he plays CB,RB and DM.

Guess I'll have to field something like this:

Lewy
Kovacic - Khedira - Piszczek
Chiellini - Pique - Mustafi
Buffon

Will have to add 2 of ST, MC ML.

Yes.
Formations won't be taken so much into account after the group stage because some might not even get a full 11. You should worry about it to build your starting team mostly. After that, you get your subs in once one of your starters gets eliminated or injured. Of course you have to replace your players according to their positions, can't sub in a forward for a goalkeeper. That's why it's also useful to get subs that are versatile enough to occupy different positions on the field and therefore replace your eliminated/inured players in a coherent way.
