No need to go back at and discuss it but I was looking at the WC2014 draft thread and found this:

Question: Do our first 11 picks have to be our starting 11 or can we pick subs with our first 11 picks?

I think we need to stress this because I think some people might pick good players but not have enough to fit into a realistic formation.

First 11 picks -> starting 11, I thought that was obvious. Otherwise people might be "stealing" potential starters for other teams. The subs are a bonus, therefore must be picked in the last rounds.

I still don't quite understand it in the context of my question, so I will ask it as a hypothetical. I have Ginter which whoscored says can play RB or DMC. I plan to play him in midfield and pick another RB who I think will play every group game but is unlikely to make it out of the groups. When he is eliminated must I sub him for one of my defender subs, or can I move Ginter to the RB position and substitute him for a midfield sub to fill that vacant roll?

Rami is a kind of a steal this late. I reckon France will go far in the competition and that he'll start.

Now that Mangala is picked I can say that actually I think I made the wrong call - with Varane and Sakho both out I assumed Rami would start but shortly after making the pick I read that he has recently had a big bust up with Deschamps, combine that with the fact that Mangala was not so bad in the later (and more internationally watched) games of last season and Kocielny seems to be the regular first choice (alongside Varane) and it seems like Rami may struggle to get many if any minutes, and it's a position where substitutes aren't normally brought on.

I did not know about that bust up with Deschamps, but to be honest I think he'll start over Mangala in case he's already made peace with the coach.
Starter for a Europa League winning side, I think that helps.
