different sexualities and their acceptance in football
at least in brazil, the acceptance seems to be very low.
i know some people who work with football (mostly journalists) and they say it seems there are lots of gay players around, it's just that they (the players) hide it basically because there's too much discrimination.
rodrigo paiva is very experienced in the world of football. he works with the sport since the early 90s and currently he is with the brazilian nt. here's what he said about homosexuality in football in a recent interview (my translation is kind of poor but i hope you can understand it):
there was a time when it had that homosexuality stuff in the youth teams, managers used to go there to see the little boys... an environment dominated by machismo -- with many people coming from the suburb, more conservative -- reprehends that kind of behaviour since the beginning. so, i think gay in football, in those 15 years, i've met only one and a half. that half one i'm not sure if he is. it's a problem if one is gay. how you're going to admit it and play for the national team? you would have to give more interviews about the theme [homosexuality] than about football. some players can have such attitude, like beckham, who paints his nails, but here in brazil, i don't know. in the 'earrings ages' it's already a problem. the football is a very conservative 'environment'.

not related to the subject, but here's an interesting he said concerning the world cup 2002 final:
felipão is very conservative. for him, the player's boots must be black. ronaldo shows up with that haircut on the day before the final match. then nike gives him a silver boot. dude, felipão went to his bedroom and he went crazy. i told him: "damn, felipão, if ronaldo's cut his hair that style and he's going to wear boots with that colour, it's because he's going to play and to play ******* well!"
since my translation is bad, i let the original last sentence here (where's hugo to translate it better?
): "porra, felipão, se o ronaldo cortou o cabelo desse jeito e vai usar uma chuteira dessa cor é porque ele vai jogar e jogar pra caralho!"
