It's still very, disproportionately important though. You get to see a how a player performs under the biggest pressure, under the most scrutiny. You also get to see how they play with teammates other than those they play with week in week out, with different tactics and managers, sometimes surrounded by weaker (or even stronger) players than usual and in different stadiums, under stricter refereeing, even in different countries. It's a great way to see the extent to which a player is successful because of himself or is propped up by circumstances at the club he happens to be at, crucial if you are looking to buy a player and take him away from that club.

Of course it sometimes backfires, but in general I am a big advocate of disproportionately judging players on their performances at world cups and confederation tournaments.

A big problem with the World Cup and summer tournaments in general is that they occur at the end of the season for most of the players many of who will be beyond tired after playing 50 plus games . The most interesting thing about the 2022 World Cup would be to see how the players perform during a mid-season competition, granted the climate would be another variable to account for. The next most interesting thing would be an International tournament that runs throughout the season but in place of International friendlies similarly to Champions League.

Random fact: Rafa Benitez has guided a team to just one top-2 finish in his last 10 seasons as a manager, Liverpool in 08/09.

4ndr3i you should have done an SG wager on Madrid to make the CL final and I shouldn't have jinxed them, then this wouldn't happen.

Perez has really lost the plot in this. To go from Mourinho and Ancelotti, to Rafa Benitez. :willis:

Random fact: Benitez won La Liga twice with Valencia. He also won the champions league with Liverpool.

What the fuck?!

Madrid officially deny the Verratti runours now.

When you post these things, it would make you an infinitely better poster if you actually correlated the information and your statement, i.e explain your reaction. What is the issue here?

Don't be a pedant. There are enough reasons to bash Xaviesta without resorting to his finger slipping.

Btw, it seems Real would like to splash on Aguero ... I would welcome that if we get Benzema ...

If true then hilarious

"Real Madrid are keen for new coach Rafa Benitez to lose weight. Senior officials are concerned by the 55-year-old's size and want him to avoid abuse from rivals fans."

Haha I read that as well. Real Madrid is all about good looks and fortune, which happens once in 5 years while Messi is playing for Barça.

Cech, after 1 season at the bench, just signed for arsenal and will make more money than in Chelsea while none wants Casillas. #elSanto

That's a quality signing for Arsenal, now all they need is a quality striker and perhaps a defensive midfielder (although Coquelin has stepped up big time). And Casillas is a joke.
