hmm...yeah, maybe, but are Ernie Ball expensive? I mean, INFESTA talks about: "Yeah, it counts for how much money they have in the bank."

Anywho even if I choose D'Addario or Ernie Ball, theyr both much better then the once I have. It's the strings that came with the guitar and they usuall suck, so, some new ones is needed.

Can you hear much difference in the sound w/distortion when it comes to strings or are the sound mostly the same?
I feel that the dist. I have is a little to deep, not perfectly clear, if you know what I mean? Though it might be my effectpedal, which isn't the best.

I can't to be honest. You can however clearly hear the difference between new and old strings. New strings sound so much brighter and nicer. Just get some new strings, put 'em on the right way, as seen in this video (http://www.daddariostrings.com/DADMultimedia.aspx?VideoID=1190), then listen to how your guitar sounds, both distorted and clean. If you still feel your distortion sounds too deep, try fiddling with the controls. Many guitarists tend to dial in way too much gain or drive.

Just spotted this thread.

If you want to see my set up, go here

http://pegasus.rutgers.edu/~chas/chasbio.html Scroll past my bio, and you'll see my guitars, amps, etc. in text and picture form.

I have since replaced the bass with an ESP in silver, which looks roughly the same as the one pictured.

Now, to get in on the current conversation: A lot has to do with amp quality as well. If you're playing through a small amplifier (one 10 inch speaker or one 12 inch speaker for example), you're very rarely going to get the sound you want. Now, if you're playing into a 8x12 full stack, on the other hand... :D :D

woa, you are equipped I can see. Geez, you rich or something? :)

my amp is a Fender FM212R. How many inch the speakers are I don't know, but they are quite large.

what are those things you got there, the one that says TUBE MP and that bottom picture with the thing with 3 knobs and a smaller pedal looking object.
what are they?

EDIT:

btw, welcome to the guitar thread :)
is that picture of you? you look like one of the guys in Korn

I've been playing around with different tunings, and one of the best has got to be the Bron-Y-Aur (Zeppelin) tuning - CACGCE. Got a very meaty tone, and by just playing the A string you can get a lot of chords easily. The song "Til Kingdom Come" by Coldplay is in this tuning (I believe), sounds great. :)

how do you tune your guitar? I mean, like CACGCE, I mean, I know how to make it a half and hole step down thanks to this electronic tuning thing I got.

btw, any one here listen to Pantera? I'm listening to 'The great southern trendkill' now, there are som prett damn cool riffs there.

I'm not too fussed about the CACGCE tuning, it's quite limited in what you can do. I prefer open D/A/G or drop D. Hell, standard tuning will do me just as well :p

Nird, you tune it just like any other tunings. Place your finger on the third fret of the A string, now that's a C so now just tune the lowest E (bass note) to the C using that as reference (or use a guitar tuner). The A stays the way it is, the third string is a C again so just tune it using the first (C ) string. Then the G just keep it as it is, next is the C again (use either the first or third string as reference for that one) and then finally the high E remains just the way it is.

And once you got that down, have a go at "Till Kingdom Come" by Coldplay, it uses the CACGCE tuning.

has anyone here listened to Pantera and the riffs on "The great southern trendkill"?

I especially like the songs: 'The great southern trendkill' and 'Living through me'

what's your favourite solo ever?

mine is the 'Nothing else matters' solo by Metallica. It's not the fastest and most difficult solo out there, but it's really good, fits perfect in the song and the build up to it makes it remarkable.
Also the solo in 'One' by Metallica sounds pretty awesome.

Piano for the win! :$

As for guitar solos, I love the solo in "Money" by Pink Floyd; the one after the sax bit and the second one, after the song calms down in the middle. They are both really high-energy solos, sound great, and give the song such a rock- feel after the 7/4 (or 7/8) beat at the start of the song. Plus the guitar part on "Stream of Consciousness" by Dream Theater, that's just crazy :D
