OFFICIAL GUITAR THRED

This is, as far as I know, the only guitar thread on SG. And now that we finally got a music forum, I thought what the hell.

Discuss todays top guitar players, guitar techniques, request tabs, discuss guitar manufactures.

I don't know if there really are many people on SG that plays guitar, but I choose to hope.

Kirk Hammet - Worlds greatest guitar player atm (imo)

Hard to say which is the best guitarist because there are so many good ones but my favourite (and defenitely one of the best) is John Frusciante.

Tom Morello...when he plays RATM songs.
I saw him play with Audioslave last week and they played Sleep Now In The Fire and Killing In The Name.
:rockman:

He gets my nomination.

you post anything that's related to guitars...usually you need to play a guitar on a basic level to really have anything to contribute with, but it's nice to see someone that doesn't play also takes a part.. (Y)

It's hard to define which one is the best...

from those still active, my options would go:

Best technique: Steve Vai

Hardest rocking - hard rock: Slash - Velvet Revolver

Hardest rocking - heavy metal: Zakk Wylde - BLS

Best live performer: Angus Young - AC/DC - Best Of All Time (Both guitarists from The Hives are quite amazing as well)

Most creative: Tom Morello - Audioslave

Best songwriter: Also Tom Morello, Audioslave's new album is class! (and Justin Hawkins - The Darkness , he's a terrific riff writer, didn't hear his new album, though)

Coolest looking: Joe Perry - Aerosmith ((H) what class!)

The best guitarists (not show-off/play-as-fast-as-you-can players) are, in no particular order:

- John Frusciante;
- Tom Morello;
- The Edge;
- Jonny Greenwood (from Radiohead);
- Jimmy Page.

I could stand here and defend my choices for hours. Here are the most obvious reasons:
- they all are very creative;
- Each of them came up with an unique style that has been copied over and over ever since;
- they're extremely talented players;
- but first and foremost, they're awesome songwriters, who understand that the guitar is there to serve the song, and not the other way around.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Santana...

I'm starting to wonder if there really are that many guitarplayers on this forum, not too many replies here...

I'm surprised no one mentions Jimi Hendrix, the greates guitarist of all time, by far

I've never really listened to jimi hendrix, all I got is his woodstock gig on DVD, and offcourse it's great, but I've grown up with metallica so naturally I prefer Kirk Hammet.

Three legends that didn't get a (major) mention in this topic.

Jimi Hendrix
I am a big Jimi Hendrix fan and what made him so special and awesome was that he played the guitar the way it had never been played before, his style was pretty much innovative and then there were the effects he pretty much introduced such as the infamous "wha-wha". Hendrix was a true master of the instrument he played. I mean, the guy was so good he played a right handed guitar left handed, that pretty much sums it up.

Stevie Ray Vaughan
Defenitely one of the best guitarists ever, if not the best. He could play like nobody else. The speed, the technical finger settings he used, the rythm, he had it all. He added a whole new flavour to the blues genre but he was equally brilliant at playing rock. Like Hendrix, he was a true master and what a shame he died so early on. If there's anyone I would have liked to seen live it would be him (and Hendrix).

Jeff Buckley
Often overlooked as a great guitar player, but he truly was. His song writing was second to none and had it not been for his early tragic death he would have gotten the recognition he deserves. He may not have been as technical as Hendrix or SRV but he could compose songs that were so clever musically, something that is often overlooked when mentioning great guitarists.

His rendition of 'Hallelujah' has one of the best clean guitar solos I've ever heard. I love playing it. And I'm convinced he recorded the song live, i.e., singing and playing at the same time!!!
His voice was magical, took you to a different place altogether, and this is one of the 10 most beautiful songs ever sung.

About good old Jimi, I give him a lot of praise for coming up with a different style and all. However, I think he's a bit overrated (definitely not the best guitarist ever), to which is tragic death and subsequent myth played a major role.

[Currently listening to: Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah] ;)

Lover you should've come over has to be one of the best songs ever!

Everytime I listen to him, it still amazes me at how he comes up with the construction of a song and the lyrics. They are going to make a movie about him, some major Hollywood production company (can't remember which one) purchased the autobiographical rights.
