God, you serious, Phil? I'd hate to see him turned into a saint by some Hollywoodesque super production. He wasn't a saint - he was a huge songwriter, vocalist and guitarist!

Three legends that didn't get a (major) mention in this topic.

Jimi Hendrix
I am a big Jimi Hendrix fan and what made him so special and awesome was that he played the guitar the way it had never been played before, his style was pretty much innovative and then there were the effects he pretty much introduced such as the infamous "wha-wha". Hendrix was a true master of the instrument he played. I mean, the guy was so good he played a right handed guitar left handed, that pretty much sums it up.

Stevie Ray Vaughan
Defenitely one of the best guitarists ever, if not the best. He could play like nobody else. The speed, the technical finger settings he used, the rythm, he had it all. He added a whole new flavour to the blues genre but he was equally brilliant at playing rock. Like Hendrix, he was a true master and what a shame he died so early on. If there's anyone I would have liked to seen live it would be him (and Hendrix).

Jeff Buckley
Often overlooked as a great guitar player, but he truly was. His song writing was second to none and had it not been for his early tragic death he would have gotten the recognition he deserves. He may not have been as technical as Hendrix or SRV but he could compose songs that were so clever musically, something that is often overlooked when mentioning great guitarists.

was Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jeff Buckley solo artists? I never heard of any of them.
I'm quite new to the whole guitar world, only played for a year, which means i've only really listened to the guitar in the songs for one year...

Downloading Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah now to listen to it, see if I find something with Stevie Ray Vaughan too.

You haven't heard of Stevie Ray Vaughan? he was arguably the best guitarist ever. Defenitely check out some of his stuff. He performed solo with his backing band called Double Trouble.

As for Jeff Buckley, I'm not surprised you haven't heard of him. He only ever released one album before drowning (while working on his second album). He isn't known for his guitar play, it's probably his 8 octave (!!!) vocal reach that he's most well known for (besides song writing), but he is an awesome and very much underrated guitarist.

I will, btw, is it Jeff Buckley that sings and plays in the "Hallelujah" song?

You can do it the easy way - simple open chords - or the way Jeff did it - with the capo of the 5th fret and playing all the arpeggios and singing at the same time. The solo is kicks major ass too.
I especially like his looooooooooooooooooooong falsetto on the end of the song. What a talent!!!

Yeah!

Out of interest, what strings does everyone use here?
I use 0.11 D'Addario for acoustic. I actually learned the guitar on 0.13 strings which was hard as f*ck but I suppose it made me learn the hard way and every string type I play now is easy as piss.
I was thinking of switching to Elixir strings but they are so damn expensive and some claim there's no real difference between Elixir and D'Addario...

to only have played guitar for a year, and not yet changed strings on my electric guitar, I really don't know which strings I have.

changed the strings on my classic guitar once, can't remember which they where, but they sound better then the once that came with it.though when I'm gonna change the onces on my el.guitar I'm gonne use Ernie Ball (since that's what Kirk uses :) )

I know Malakian uses D'Addario strings, and he plays both beautiful melodies and insane riffs on them.......so they should be good. :ewan:

D'Addario is a great choice indeed: good, reliable and cheap. I have them on my acoustic guitar (.011) and sometimes use them on my electric guitar too.
Currently, though, I have a set of Dean Markley's Blue Steel .011. I like their sound better on my electric guitar but they last less than 6 months (at least with me).

Yeah, it's the thickness of the strings. 0.10 is extra light so it's easy on the fingers, then something like 0.13 is pretty thick and it's harder on the fingers. Although it depends how you want to play the guitar, for instance I've got a guitar that I use to take to the beach, holidays, whatever with me so I use extra light strings (0.10) so I can just play nice and chilled and don't need to work the fretboard too much but for my other nice guitar I use 0.11 gauge strings.

but all the six strings are in different thickness, is 0.10 the thickness of low-e-string (meaning the one with the brightest sound) then? Because the E string is much thicker...right?
