Carroll deserves United chance

Manchester United look certain to welcome back Rio Ferdinand when they face bitter rivals Liverpool on Monday, but who will line up behind him is less certain.

Following some indifferent form by Tim Howard, United's perennial back-up Roy Carroll could be handed responsibility to stop the flow of opposition goals.

The Northern Ireland international has played 23 times for The Red Devils in The Premiership and has only been on the losing side once, against Portsmouth last April.

Since signing from Wigan Athletic, Carroll has saved 82 percent of goalbound shots, significantly more than higher profile shot-stoppers Fabian Barthez and Tim Howard (both 73 percent).

Even more impressive is the time required by United's opposition to score past the ex-Wigan custodian.

On average, Carroll has been beaten just once for every 160 minutes played, and massive 67 minutes more than any of his United team-mates.

The table below contains all Premiership data for the last five seasons.

i ain't know carroll have such good record. but i think he is more commanding than howard. i saw him scolding and correcting defenders errors but i hardly see howard do that

Yeah I agree Carroll should be given a chance..
I wonder what were Massimo Taibi's stats at united :p

Would've been interesting to see Peter's stats...

i agree Carroll deserves a go...but dropping Howard now will destroy his confidence which is not exactly good for the team (even if he becomes the backup goalie)..

I think we give Howard Liverfool game his last chance 2 redeem(correct spell?) himselve n proof tat he is United no.1 goalkeeper....if he fail...then SAF can think of a change in united goal line.......

It's not tim howards fault that we have 6 points in 5 games. So many other factors go into this like the insane injury list and the absence of ferdinand... not to mention the crap play of silvestre. Remember, howard last year was the best gk in the premiership (i think that was his award... not sure completly).

Howard has commited some howlers recently, maybe he should sit out a few games. But i dont think he should fully lose his starting job. Everyone goes through their bad spells. Just ask barthez ;)

Howard is a better goalkeeper than Carroll but every goalkeeper goes through some bad spells, even Schmeichel had a few bad spells in his time at United. What I'd do is play Carroll for a few games, give Howard a rest and then bring him back into the side, adds a bit of compeition for the keeper's spot.

Howard can save some unsavable shots but in the same time he loses some easy ones. just like Barthez  but he is still a worldclass goalkeeper. i would like to see him start with Ferdinand in the Liverpool game.

Not sure if he start though still short of match fitness, but whatever line-up we put, we got to beat those scouser cos we simply can't afford to drop any more points.

He said: 'There is definitely a debt of honour to repay the boss and I intend to repay him by putting in top-class performances. I've been doing extra training and have probably worked harder than I did when I was playing because you are not keeping back energy for games.

'I have been training harder than ever so that when I do return, I can hit the ground running. I really started training with a purpose when we came back for pre-season.

and...
'I have also been able to analyse my game and try to improve on things. When I come back, hopefully people will see a much better player.'

:rockman: Rio, you boost our morale up!!! :rockman:
