Fergie demands Rio decision
Sir Alex Ferguson has again told Rio Ferdinand to sign his new contract.
It is only seven days since the Manchester United boss told his £29million record signing it was time he made up his mind over committing his future to the Old Trafford outfit.
Despite the threat, Ferdinand has so far failed to sign a deal reputedly worth
£100,000-a-week, irritating Ferguson and causing anger among the United fans who believe the England international owes the club for standing by him during his eight-month suspension for a missed drugs test.
The longer the matter drags on, the more Ferguson's worries over Ferdinand's infamous meeting with Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon will grow.
And so, 48 hours before Ferdinand is due to face Charlton in the Barclays Premiership, the Scot has again demanded an end to the saga.
"Rio's agent is apparently out of the country," he said.
"There is nothing much we can do about that but when he gets back we want a decision.
"It is important to the Manchester United fans that they get one.
"We are not going to be messed about. We have shown great faith in signing these players and we need to see it returned."
Ferguson also claims to be mystified by the comments of Roy Carroll's agent Francis Martin that the Northern Ireland international would be willing to sign a new deal this summer if the United boss pledged not to buy a new keeper in the summer.
"Roy Carroll's agent has been talking to the press, but he has not spoken to us for months so we don't know the situation there," Ferguson added.
Striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy and defender Gabriel Heinze both miss the trip to The Valley, with Nistelrooy still troubled by an ankle problem.
"We are just analysing what to do next with that one. It's not a serious one, it's just a niggling bit of bone, a bruise on the bone that's causing a bit of bother," Ferguson said.
Heinze is recovering from damaged ankle ligaments. Ferguson said that the Argentina full-back was facing a race against time to be fit to face Arsenal in the FA Cup final on May 21.
"Knowing him, he is such a determined and brave lad he will want to play and we will give him every chance to play. He deserves to be there."
