Athletico Madrid lost Diego Costa and got Mandzukic, a prolific striker and Griezmann, a prolific winger. I don't know what ShiftyPowers meant with "worked for Athletico Madrid".

They existed before 2013 asshole. They replaced fucking Falcao with Diego Costa who, on loan with Vallecano the year prior, was outscored by Michu.

They brought in David Villa also who is a reliable striker. A few years ago, they brought in Falcao to replace Aguero.

A reliable striker yes, but way past his prime. He was mostly brought in to accommodate/support Diego Costa. He himself said so in some interview i read ages ago. He was a good acquisition for them, just for one season, though. If you watched Atleti matches you could see right away that he was not the same player he used to be (that damn injury fucked him up even more). Most of the time he couldn't play for 90 minutes without his level of performance dropping with every minute in the end, and even Raúl García was being used in his role (also a great player for them, underrated) to support Costa.

Still, even a lower transfer than origi/Lambert if he ended up in Melbourne a year later

But he did have a good season. You could rely on him in Costa's absence.

Lambert? Have you seen him play for Liverpool this season? Completely useless so far. Origi is probably someone for the future but he's loaned out anyway.

Falcao and Costa played together at Atléti the season they won Copa at Bernabeu. Costa were going to be loaned to Rayo again because he didn't had the Spanish passport yet and Atleti had Salvio, MIranda and Godín but earned his spot in the preseason and Salvio went to Benfica.

My point is that they did not replace Falcao with a star, they replaced him with a mediocre player to that point in his career.

Lambert was absolutely a waste of money; the guy is like 33 and I said so at the time. Of course, he only cost 5m.

I suspect he was basically signed to help persuade the other Southampton targets that Liverpool wanted to come and to act as a father figure for them once they arrived.

Sanchez 35m
Lallana 25m
Markovic 20m

You pay only 10m pounds more to get a world class player than a Southampton class player.
