Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Re-watched it after having read the first book and it really does it no justice. As a film it's fine: rarely do I find a Sam Rockwell film I don't enjoy and most of the other actors (Freeman, Fry, Rickman, Mos Def, Nighy) combine for a funny experience but having read the first book now all you can see are the omitted jokes, etc.

The books are so clever, and that ironic humour just doesn't translate into a movie.

The Drop - this is definitely worth your time, Tom Hardy is hot stuff at the moment and this is as good as I've seen him, very tense, tightly wound movie, doesnt over extend itself, doesnt push credulity, just keeps the pressure on. Also the last ever performance from James Gandolfini. Not big or ambitious enough to really challenge for awards, but I quite liked the muted scale, and it is definitely a high quality picture - great acting, good dialogue, well shot and claustrophobicly edited.

No Good Deed and The Captive...... two very pedestrian movies, The Captive was at least brave in it's subject matter but not well made, not convincing, not real. No Good Deed was really just an excuse for Idris Elba to relish playing an irredeemably horrible character, but he didnt carry it all that well and the rest of the film was completely forgettable.

The November Man..... critics didnt like it but I did, if you ignore the fact that the central characters have Belgrade as a playground and blow up everything/shoot everyone in sight without so much as the sound of a police siren, I found this to be a good, engrossing, twisty and hard boiled film, with neither of the male protagonists particularly likable, you cheer them on yet you know they are bastards. I have always liked Brosnan films where he has obviously had some input into his character and performance (unlike Bond where his great portrayal of bond was let down by terrible scripts and sequences which I am sure even he cringed at performing), he has a great sense of humour and natural roguishness which combines with otherwise violent, tough characters extremely well, as in The Matador and in this. This film was exciting and tense, somewhat relevant, with enough drive to paper over the flaws.

A Walk Among The Tombstones.... not dissimilar in that it's a film lead by a one man band (Neeson here rather than Brosnan). I liked this one too, there were some leaps in deduction which stretched credulity and the 'bad guys' (drug dealers) Neeson was working on behalf of were totally unconvincing, but it was nicely measured in pace, the action kept short and sweet, resulting in a genuine sense of tension and menace. Some heavy handed direction (a nonsensical voiceover of the AA twelve steps at the end for example) were counter balanced by some equally nuanced touches such as the 'surprise suicide' (not a surprise because it was in the trailer) which had a great impact both visually and on the story. It was well shot in 'foggy' pastel tones which gave a bit of an old school noir vibe, and to its credit, certain brutality was not shied away from. There were lots of things not to like about this film, i dont know, maybe the fact I enjoyed both this and November Man show I am becoming either a) less picky and pedantic or b) dumber and more easily satisfied, but overall I had a good time at the cinema with both of them.

I also attempted to see The Equalizer, I was torn between going to the cinema down the road or busing 30 minutes to see it in IMAX, I went for the later option only for the power to go down literally as the opening credits were rolling and the cinema to be evacuated. Last time I ever bother with that shite, I'll go and see it in the normal cinema midweek.

Starting XI
The Normal Heart (2014) - Well... Dallas Buyers Club was already made, so i don't really see why on earth did someone come up with this idea. I had to force myself watching through this drivel.

Even the female doctor was like copied from the latter. I don't know what was Mark Ruffalo trying to achieve. To win an Oscar? Sorry pal, Brokeback Mountain was already made 8 years ago (i've not seen it, though). Was all that male intimacy necessary? It made me almost turn it off after 15 minutes but i carried on. Later on it was just laughable. Ruffalo whining like a girl throughout the movie, he did make a good bufty though, i gotta admit.

Blue Ruin (2013) - Pfff.. Not much dialogue, but kept you kind of interested throughout the movie, not bad, not anything exceptional either. Highly rated by the "critics".

Frailty (2001) - I don't know how i stumbled across this. Seemed like such a B movie, McConaughey wasn't bad in this. I'm not a fan of this genre, but it wasn't _bad_. Good acting, and a psychological thriller instead of some horror shite suits me better.
Haven't really had much to watch recently so this is what i've come down to.

I totally agree about Gone Girl, I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I loved the tone of the movie, the use of digital film, the soundtrack. I also loved David Fincher's adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Annabelle - Yawn. I thought it would be decent since I thought The Conjuring was actually scary, but of course not. Just another pointless, predictable CGI monster generated Hollywood movie. Like I said... yawn.

in the last few years Paranormal Activity 1 and 2 were decent, as was The Conjuring ... Insidious 2 also qualifies as decent, I guess ... The Conjuring is why I too considered watching Annabelle, but the reviews have been poor, so I decided against it ... this Halloween season has disappointingly few horror movies releasing (that I know of) ...

so does anyone have good horror movie suggestions? I had high hopes for Cabin in the Woods based on reviews, but it wasn't scary, and the twist was stupid ... similar story with The Ring, which I hadn't watched until last week -- I thought the girl would walk out of the TV wayyy earlier in the film; it proved to be the only moment threatening to be scary in any way ... it also left too much unexplained about the son and his communication with the girl in the well ...

Why did you whiten the word 'twist'?

Also, I really liked Cabin in the Woods, it was very original and entertaining. It's just not a scary movie but was it even supposed to be?

Hmmm.. I'm not really a huge fan of horror movies, i prefer psychological thrillers without any nonsense, but on top of my head i could recommend these two. There's probably something else as well, but i don't feel like looking them up right now.

Jacob's Ladder (1990) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099871/reference

The Others (2001) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0230600/?reference

Now these are not your typical horror movies, both of them are quality. I'll see if i can come up with something else.

El día de la bestia - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112922/reference .. I don't know whether to call this your typical horror movie, but it's quite funny haha.

There's also Shutter - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0440803/reference, the Asian version, i've only seen it once, but it was ok. Anyway i could go on and on but i'm going to stop now. :D

Off the top of my head: The House of the Devil by Ti West. I think it's the best contemporary horror film I've watched over the last few years (I don't watch a lot of horror). I also enjoyed Drag Me to Hell by Sam Raimi, but that's more of a guilty pleasure.

My favorite horror movies of all time are The Exorcist, Rosemary's Baby and Psycho.

awesome, keep the suggestions coming ...

@Az: I think you're right about the movie's intent ... I'd been led to believe that it was something that it wasn't (scary), so I was of course let down ... it's possible I'd have reacted differently if I was expecting the movie to be more tongue-in-cheek (as it was) ...

@C: "The Others" suggestion seems promising ... good, old-school creepy horror is definitely a yes (Y) ...

@J:

yeah, I've watched those great classics ... that spiderwalk down the stairs from "The Exorcist" was a genuinely jarring scene ...

have you watched Raimi's "Evil Dead"? how would you compare "Drag Me to Hell" in terms of tone and style?
