Real close in on Fabio
Wednesday 18 August, 2004
Reports in Italy today insist that Fabio Cannavaro is on the verge of leaving Inter for Real Madrid.
The Italian international captain was associated with a Spanish switch earlier this week and talks are believed to be taking place.
Stories in the peninsula claim that Inter are ready to sell and that the player is open to the transfer.
However, there are a few economical problems that must be resolved before the swoop can be completed.
Cannavaro currently earns around £3m a season, a figure that Real would like the former Parma ace to reduce.
But Inter could offer Madrid a helping hand by reducing their asking price for the stopper in order for them to pay the player his current salary.
The Nerazzurri’s original valuation of £8m could be lowered to just £4m so that the switch may occur.
Although Cannavaro is one of the best defenders around, the San Siro outfit are keen to reduce their costs as his contract doesn’t expire until 2006.
The 30-year-old has been linked with a move to Juventus this summer but Real now seem to be in pole position for the international.

I never felt he would go to Juve, and he's not going to Milan, thats just funny.
But for some reason I can see him going to join Madrid, doesn't matter if he's captain or not.
Milan or Juve being our biggets rival there's no way our admin is stupid enough to sell him to either of them.
