I don't see why anyone would need an AK47. Still, it has never been proven that gun ownsership leads to violence. Actually, I'm pretty sure a lot of people in Canada own guns, and there isn't a lot of crime up there. In Florida, they made it legal to carry a concealed weapon (with a license of course) and this has caused gun violence to go down. Also, the areas where there are more guns per person are not the areas where there is the most crime. I probably will never own a gun, but I am not anti-gun. If you want to own a gun and you are not a criminal, you should be allowed to.

Look up the gun stats on Switzerland... they have tons of them, and not much crime.

For all those people that say that people can get guns even when they are illegal. They are right. Something interesting though, murder is illegal and it is still commmited often, so why not just make it legal since the law doesnt work anyway. my point being that just because something will happen even if its illegal doesnt always mean it should be legal.
I mean personal ownership of assault weapons.....that will just kill cops and make gang violence worse. Call me crazy but I would rather have a system where its hard to get a gun like this but unfortunetly it can happen then a system where u pretty much just have to go to the local gun store and pick one up.

However, culture, especially in the black community, glorifies guns as a way of solving your problems. You might be able to turn this argument a few different ways and add different groups or subcultures into the mix but that's where most of the problem is at this point.

What on Earth does that mean? Black people glorify guns as a way of solving your problems? Was John Wayne black? Was Lee Marvin? Charles Bronson is not, to the best of my knowledge, black. And I don't think Clint Eastwood is an African American.

A lot of people on this board are asking, who really needs an AK-47? That answer is simple to find. Al Qaeda training manuals praise the ease with which potential terrorists can acquire such weapons in this country. So thank you, Republicans, for putting NRA money and terrorists ahead of the overwhelming will of the American people.

Ever listen to rap? Watch hip hop videos? Ever been the ghetto?

The fact that you have to ask this question is rather funny.

And don't blame Republicans for something the democrats should have made a LIFETIME ban, not just 10 years.

He said culture in the black community, which essentially means hip-hop culture. He didn't say black people, he said culture.

Taken from DMX's One More Road To Cross
Yo, I've been casin the liquor store, for a month now
with me and two other niggaz, is about to run up in there and shut it down
I got four people on the inside, one stay in the back
Two stock boys, one at the register but he count the stacks
Aight bitch, put on the ski mask, make sure that when we ask
for the dough they know that we takin all three bags
Now see that? You gotta hero, shoot that nigga
Matter of fact, you hit the back, I'll put two in that nigga
Hardhead mother****ers always get it
I told him what would happen if he moved the nigga moved so I did it
Did you get it? I asked my man as he was comin from the back
Nigga opened his mouth said nothin and fell out flat
This cat come out spittin, hittin my mans, his mans
Couldn't control what was in his hands
I'm hit, damn! I bust back, and got the **** up out of there
Didn't get a dime, but at least I got up out of there
Yes, hip-hop culture glorifies guns and their use to solve problems. If you want, I'll find many more, maybe hundreds of, songs that do so.

I need to come back to this for one reason. The violence that John Wayne, Bronson, and Eastwood glorified was totally different than what is going on now.

Think about Dirty Harry and Bronson in Death Wish or whatever... they were capping people for revenge or justice purposes. That is totally different than how hip hop portrays things now.

John Wayne was killing Indians (which has been a bad part of hollywood culture in the past) and was in some WWII movies... again, totally different than the culture of the black community now. It goes alot deeper than just the music and lifestyle that companies market, but it's a big problem.

Thanks bjmenge, you were right. It's not "blacks", but a part of the culture that many of them are indoctrinated into.

Exactly rhizome. I never said hip-hop culture doesn't glorify violence. To be fair, Elder never said hip-hop culture does. He said "Black culture." And you know, I've listened to a lot of Bill Cosby records, I read a lot of Langston Hughes, love Duke Ellington, and I don't recall them ever glorifying violence. Excessive violence is a problem in all kinds of American culture, and to try and blame the problem on Black people is ignorant and counterproductive. I don't remember those Columbine kids being black, nor do I remember hearing about them listening to a lot of Ice Cube and Ice T.

Nope, but they wore black clothes.... :hump:

Actually, you are correct Brondby, so I have to retract my previous statement. There are actually many forms of "black culture" and hip hop is but one of them.

However, blacks kill more blacks it seems than white kids killing other white kids. You can link it to many different things, but the hip hop, ghetto life, fatherless culture that a lot of these kids grow up in is destroying them.

*EDIT* Speaking of Bill Cosby, you saw how he was demonized by the black community by pointing out the obvious problems within it didn't you?
