It's not scary to me, but I am sure it is scary to the rest of the world. As if America didn't have enough people hating it already. The one thing the world can always fall back on when it comes to America is "well, we know what football is and it's not played with a brown oblong ball."

If the US wins a World Cup, I bet people protest. 2010 is the target.. Donovan, Adu, Martino... they are all being groomed.
But you have to remember that the other NT will be developing as well. Brazil will have Robinho, Kaka, Diego and Adriano at their peaks, not to mention Argentina with Cavenaghi and Tevez, Italy with Gilardino and Cassano, plus France can always get some senegalese or argelian and turn him into a genius.:crazyboy:

not again that freakin game in 2002...

the point is that americans keep going on and on about their mediocre players and their crap league, I'm not saying Portugal is better than them, I'm just saying they suck and I would never refer to Portugal's national team as they refer to their own national team. Even though I think we are much better at most levels and I also think we also won't be winning the WC any time soon.

I roared with laughter because Elder spoke about Reyna as someone would speak of Pele or Maradona. :funny:

And I'm not really in the mood for another discussion about the game in the World Cup because we also lost to Korea and I don't see any koreans rubbing it to our faces, everytime they're given the chance.
And for instance France lost all their games at the WC and look how they are now... do people in Senegal think they are better than France?

You know zilch about football if you think you can grow a world cup winning team in 6 years relying on 3 or 4 players that are unproven atm, when there's countries with the pool of talent like Brazil, Argentina, France, Italy, etc where the difficult thing is to pick a team because there are so many damn good players.

You do not use the same mentality towards forming a National team as you do a club team where any Tom Dick or Harry can join just because they want to.........A NT should be represented by players from that paticular country not made up from odds and sods from all over the world......whats the point in that ...as a country you are not proving anything.......but if your philosophy is to win at all costs never mind the moral right or wrongs ,then as a NT you will never be respected.USA has been doing this for years, giving non Americans nationality and popping them in the NT .I personally think its demeaning to need to use foreign talent in the team because if you cant produce good enough players in your own country then you dont deserve to win anything. If i had my way,the only way to qualify for the NT is to be BORN in that country ....non of this crap about your great grandfather being born there or as with France for instance ,using players who were born in a country that used to be a colony of France.Fifa should do something right for once and stop all this stupid nonsense now.Adu lived in England before he went to the USA but he is Ghanian so he should only play for Ghana.I think you gotta have a real personality and identity problem if you can bring yourself to play for a country that you were not born in.......I will just never understand it.I am not happy about the influx of sportsmen coming to this country from another and representing the country either......Greg Rudeski....Owen Hargreaves.....christ even Michael Owen was born in Wales.......Sorry but its all a very unfunny joke........Oh and maybe Portugals NT have not achieved anything great in football......but they have the respect of the footballing world because their players are at least Portuguese and not made up of international mercenaries......and besides that they are a very old football nation and for that, as with many countries ,are entitled to respect.......And it dont matter how many World cups you win with a bunch of mercenaries.......you will never win respect

good point....I mean America does have 260 MILLION people living in it....on ewould think that finding talent in that big pool alone would not be out of the question, when you compare it to the size of a country like Portugal....
BTW Figo is better than all the US national team combined

And if i may add, Portuguese NT is always a good side to watch, even without winning we always play good and skillfull football, as for the American NT, well, i´ll leave an empty space...

maybe Edu should play for Portugal.he has portuguese citizenship
it would give us an option for our Horrible left side. Simao is playing wellfor benfica, same goes for Boa Morte for Fulham, but when the play for Portugal they are ****e. Lately a lot of our players have been playing like ****, except for figo

The game against the USA was a one time thing. It happened and it probably won't happen any time soon

i really like this topic(until it went off topic). I meant to post something like this for the longest time, but didn't in fear of being beaten by all your posts!lol!

He did say a lot of things that were true, like how British ppl think their soccer (football) is best. I also like his comment on British media's views on divers. Like against Porto, man u supporters accused us of cheating, when only Carlos Alberto was the one diving.(the kid is good but he's like C.Ronaldo, too much tricks, too much dives, even though Ronaldo stopped)The british media always makes up excuses as well after their big teams lose in European comps. If you see the Video on ManU official site, on how Porto WHOLE team dove. I watched the video and i only saw C.Alberto dive(he's a diver, i know that for a fact). that was something stupid too post on a website even though it might have been true. It's still pathetic.

it's also like somebody said in this thread:
"in england their called divers
in Spain their called miracle men...or something like that"
the quote is wrong but it went something like that.
different mentalities in latin leagues lie Brasil, Portugal, Italy, Spain then in England.

PS. Don't get me wrong i love the EPL, can't miss any game that gives here on Sportsnet on Saturday mornins

Ok, one last debate with a Portugese fan. By saying the US has a crap league and dismissing it outright, shows you have no comprehension of what players beat your players at the world cup. Yeah, 2 goals from guys in a crap league, and one from a guy who is injured all year long playing for Ajax.

Our league may be crap, but it will grow in time. It's a whole 9 years old... What's funny is how you state that you "would never refer to Portugal the way we refer to the US team" and then go on about how much greater Portugal is at all levels. Come on, just admit it, you haven't won anything, and you never will. At least the US has some Gold Cups. :p

Have you ever watched Reyna play? He may not be a Maradona or Pele, but he is also not that type of player. Watch him play sometimes, he is one of th best passers of the ball and readers of the game around today.

When was the last time argentina or italy won something? Thought so. The plan for the US team is to win the WC by 2010. There are many other players that will come along, and probably many of them will come from different countries and get their citizenship to play.
