Yes because somehow it's going to be very hard for Dubai to compete with all of Malaysia's fake rolex watches, the $5 Redbook (Reebok) and Adibas shoes, or the chinese made Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein aftershave & cologne. :nape:

I always wondered about racism in Muslim countries... like I've noticed in places like Saudi Arabia and Egypt there are a lot of black people, do they get treated any less than Arabs, are there ever inter marriages?

Dubai is truly impressive.

But as an Arab, I see pictures of Dubai, see their channel on TV, hear about it from my friends who've been there, and think: No character. Probably why westerners feel comfortable living there. As for me, I'd choose a job and home in Canada over Dubai anytime. (with the exception of one job)

That said, it's the most successful 'Arab' city, most impressive. But far from the best place to live in (for me).

Harvard's Hospital in Dubai's Healthcare city remains my dream job :)

I wish them the best of luck, and I salute the governers of the city for the superb use of money. Unlike SA and other filthy rich countries that have money-management skills of a 3-year old.

Well technically I think everyone should be equals, since it's part of the religion and if I can remember correctly there was some sort of prominent black character around the time of Muhammad. In practice though, I think that might not be quite true.

My say is racism isn't -and never was- an issue there... And in countries like Egypt, the population is very multi-racial. Arabs in general are one of the most multi-racial populations on the planet. Terms such as "inter-marriages" don't even exist :)

Discrimination against blacks was very prevalent in the past during the days of slavery which date back since way before Islam, but today it doesn't seem as much of a problem as it is in some other parts of the world. They are mostly seen to be as Arab as everyone else.

But in the Gulf countries in particular they tend to look down on some groups based on their nationality, such that a black person from the UK might not face too many hassles, but someone from a 3rd world country like Bangladesh just gets no respect, even though they could be Muslims as well.

There's also some degree of friction between Gulf and non-Gulf Arabs. Arabs from non-oil countries like Egypt and Lebanon often view the Gulfies as primitive bedouins who struck it lucky with their oil. While the Gulf people think the other Arabs are a bunch of freeloaders trying to sponge money off them. Regardless, a lot of intermarriages do occur between them, and also between people of different skin colours.

No real racism in Arabia although they do tend to respect anyone with a western passport, and treat everyone else like shit.

So true, esp. in Gulf Countries. When I travel with my Canadian passport, I feel the difference even while I'm still at the airport. It's partly what I meant by "No character" in their current building culture.

Dubai is about 80% foreigners anyway, so there's no real racism or threat there. There are some middle eastern and predominantly muslim countries which are really threatening and dangerous places for westerners to be, and others which are extremely friendly and tolerant. Probably exactly the same as other cultures see the west, but in greater extremity at both ends of the spectrum.

And The_Knight is getting positive rep purely for being SG's most badass poster.

wow d3adly you're from the Emirates? i would've never guessed.

This racism issue aside you don't really have much else to be ashamed of, the UAE is still a great place to live in and on the whole i've found people from the Emirates to be very warm and generous.

It's just disappointing that they allow the kind of discrimination that takes place to go unchecked. Obviously not everyone is subjected to it but you see it happening all the time. Like when you go down to the markets and see adults and even little kids yelling at the Pakistani shopkeepers as if they were supposed to be their servants, or when you're flipping through the job ads in the paper, a few of them might say something like 'non-Westerners need not apply'. Of course this stuff also happens in other neighbouring countries, but you hear about it more in Dubai because it's such an international city.

I think it's largely a consequence of the rapid changes that these Gulf countries have seen in the last couple of decades. They've been swamped by foreigners from all over the world and suddenly they've become a small minority in their own countries. They know that the rich westerners will only want to stay for a little while and then return home, but they're worried that millions of Asians and Arabs are going to come over and stay for good and eventually change the character of their country, so sometimes the laws are less kind to them.

Fortunately the rulers of Dubai are beginning to realise that this behaviour is hurting the image of their city, and they're trying to improve conditions for many of their guest workers, but i think it's going to take some time before they can actually affect any real change and stamp out the discrimination all together.

More than two thirds of those foreigners are from the Indian subcontinent and they're mostly employed by locally owned companies, so the problem is a little bigger than you might think.
