There was speculation about Shearer playing for England again less than a year ago but that was stopped by Shearer himelve who said his priority's lie with the Toon.

what england miss is someone whose good in the air, rooney and owen are both short-arses so they can't help, and heskey can't tell his arse from his elbow so good knows how he manages to get his head on the ball.

anyway, rooney has improved enough, so beattie won't be called up unless one of them gets injured between now and sunday.

IMO the biggest problem with England is that the lack class in some fields, unlike other big teams that have tons of talent for everywhere, England really suck in the GK area, and the Left sided areas, there are no real Leftwingers in England or a good Left forward, I mean seriously, drop Heskey in any other big team in Europe and he wouldn't stand a chance for the bench and its the same about the GK's, what other big team in Europe has their starting GK from the 2nd division?? Thats sad.... not that James isn't ok, but its still sad....

well it's not really james' entire fault that his team's no longer in the premiership. but i argue with england's lack of a left midfielder (whether naturally left-footed or converted ala pires).

Rooney did well on the left against Turkey, he'll be a candidate for the left-wing.

Although some people fail to see that there is more to Strikers than just scoring(Rob cough )

I see Rooney more of a winger/foward than a striker.

He did, but his most previous games for England, he was mostly down the left flank successfully beating players 1on1(Turkey and Liechtenstein).

Rooney is the answer to the problems on the left.

I thought they could play Lampard or Joe Cole down the left. They're both really versatile, especially Lampard. He's been on fire for Chelsea.

Cole will only play down the left at Chelsea. If Duff isn't starting. No way Ranieri will put Lampard on the left. He plays him out on the right, in that diamond midfield, with Makelele holding the midfield and Veron or Cole normally behind the 2 strikers with Mutu dropping back.

I believe we tried Joe Cole there a couple of times before, didn't really work.

I think we'll have to wait years untill we find that proper left-winger.

How can Sven leave out McManaman, he's been fine for Man City.
