He's just missing players. That's more or less a diamond, but with Bernat on the wing instead of up top; Brazil ran something similar with Dunga the first time. Lahm plays midfield and wing (i.e. carillero), which was the Ramires role with Brazil. It's a slick way to make it feel like you have 12 players on the pitch. I wouldn't be surprised to see Renato Sanches in that role when the season starts, he seemed to do something similar with Portugal at the Euros. I speculate it won't be Lahm because you need a crazy wingback also, it's not just the carillero's job to hold down the right wing, but also the wingback, so those two players play one and a half positions each; Brazil had Maicon and Ramires, which was ideal because they can both run forever. If Bayern try something like that I'd imagine the carillero would be on the left with Alaba the wingback. The 1 winger/forward, or the Robinho role can be any number of kinds of players, so Muller would be great there, also Robben, Costa, Coman, Ribery. I've always been a big fan of this system. You pack the midfield with a diamond without losing any width.

Alonso would drop between the CBs in possession, the FBs push on, and Robinho drifts more towards the middle.

What do you mean? Just Boateng, who might be back for the season opener, Sanches, and Coman/Robben.

Boateng and Sanches were hurt at the Euros.

But I agree, it was very stupid to blame Pep and not that hack of a doctor he finally forced out. Pep was right about him, I don't care if there's a "family atmosphere" around the club, the players should be treated with real physiotherapy, not honey injections.

There haven't been a lot of meteoric rises like this at top clubs like Barca/Bayern/Real in the last few years, but one is happening now. Joshua Kimmich is Bayern's second best midfielder and Germany's best (non retired) right back. The kid is amazing and deserves to start every match in which he's fit; above Thiago, above Xabi Alonso, above Renato Sanches... only Vidal is arguably better, but I could make the argument.

Huh what the fuck? You simply cannot compare Kimmich to the likes of Thiago or Renato Sanches. Kimmich's main position is DM although he can play pretty much everywhere, like you said as a right-back for Germany, for example. But putting him above those is just plain wrong. They don't even play the same position. Come on what the hell.

Also Javi Martinez would do a better job as a DM in a 4231 system than him, that's almost certain. Remember how essential he was to Bayern under Heynckes in that position? IMO he's being wasted as a CB but I guess the manager knows better than I do lol. Meaning that he'd be better as a DM.

His "main position" is box-to-box or central midfielder. He's better than Renato, he just is. Renato is all energy, all natural talent, but he gives the ball away and was exposed at the weekend against Schalke. Kimmich has outstanding technique and can score goals from all over: tap-ins, headers, rockets from 25 yards. He's surprisingly one of the best midfielders in world football right now.

Renato Sanches probably needs a little more time to adapt to the team, a new envoirment, country etc.

I believe his best is yet to come. What's there to believe actually, can't see it not happening.

Not that I'm saying Kimmich is rubbish, he's incredible. But better than Renato Sanches? Dunno, right now yes maybe. But once the Portuguese starts excelling, he'll surpass him, I think.

I didn't see the match, but they aren't completely similar players anyway when it comes to position and playstyle. Not talking about talent here, but just where they play or mostly excel.

I suppose you're correct. No point of arguing from here anymore.

Haven't watched him this season, based that mostly on what I had seen of him last season (having to play as a CB though because of the injuries that Bayern had) and during the Euros where he featured as a right-back - being excellent while at it.

He's most likely developed a bit further now so I'll probably try and see some Bayern match in the future against tougher opposition, where he's playing as a midfielder which is his natural position afterall.
