Van der Vaart wouldn't cost 30M, more like 15-20M.
He's more of an attacking midfielder than a classic playmaker. Left footed, a great shot, good set pieces, leadership abilities (captain at Ajax and Hamburg at such a young age), fighting spirit, no language barrier.
The problem is his injury proneness. He's guaranteed to miss 1/3 of the season.

He's a nice target man and all but he turns 30 next year. I wouldn't spend big money on him.Schweinsteiger and Van der Vaart IMO are the same type of player.
If Bayern do end up getting Franck Ribery then I see him playing in the left flank and Diesler on the right flank. But I can also see Schweinsteiger and Franck switching from the left flank maybe even AMC to feed the ball to Pizarro, Makaay, and Poldi. Also Santa Cruz needs to be sold asap before everyone finds out how bad he sucks and that he was always overrated even as a youngster o yea and his health problems never helped either.

He's a very interesting player, but I don't think we need him. We don't really need someone else to score goals, but actually to create them. Sure, it's a plus if he can score, but we have a sad midfield with no creativity at all so that should be our priority. I'd say him and another playmaker would be great (
