Spalletti answers Roma critics

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Luciano Spalletti says this quarter-final berth is an answer to Roma’s critics and hailed his players for a heroic display.

“You can say this was a proof of maturity from the squad. They stayed calm from start to finish and scored two fantastic goals. They were also perfect in not falling for the provocation that Lyon were trying on our players. There were some fouls that could have been avoided.”

The Giallorossi were held 0-0 at the Olimpico, but overturned expectations to win 2-0 away to favourites Olympique Lyonnais.

“We had a few draws recently in Serie A, but this was most definitely not a crisis. We are still second in the table and notching up results consistently. These lads have done what they needed to – and more – but some smartypants likes to suggest they are failing or having problems. I won’t accept this kind of talk,” snapped the Coach.

“When there is talk of failure if you lose one game, I find that excessive. Roma played well and won the tie deservedly, so there’s no need to go into other areas beyond the field.”

Francesco Totti opened the scoring with a free header from Max Tonetto’s intelligent cross, but the captain turned provider for Amantino Mancini’s magnificent individual effort, complete with almost half a dozen stepovers to turn Squillaci inside out.

Marco Cassetti was also particularly impressive, despite the fact he was only a last-minute change for the flu-hit Christian Panucci.

“Cassetti did well in the game and especially to be ready in the warm-up despite being told he would be on the bench if Panucci recovered. To play with such enthusiasm and commitment even in that situation, he deserves praise.”

Yet Spalletti’s men are trailing by 16 points in Serie A to an Inter outfit that were eliminated by Valencia this evening.

“Inter have shown a maturity and belief in their own abilities they have never had before. It’s a large gap, it’s true, but that is down to Inter’s extraordinary season rather than Roma’s mistakes.”

Forza Spalletti

Chivu undergoes nose surgery

Roma defender Cristian Chivu will undergo surgery after fracturing his nose in the Champions League match with Lyon.

The Giallorossi qualified for the last eight after their historic 2-0 win, but Chivu was hurt in a clash with Fred.

The Brazilian’s elbow made contact with the stopper whose nose bled heavily as a result. The incident was unseen by referee Mejuto Gonzalez.

Chivu will undergo minor plastic surgery in Rome on Wednesday afternoon and it is unclear how long he will be sidelined for.

However, Chivu was already set to miss Sunday evening’s clash with Udinese after he was handed a one-match ban for his booking at Ascoli.

The Giallorossi, who returned from Lyon on Tuesday night, were granted a one-day break and will resume training on Thursday morning in view of the Week 28 match with the Zebrette.

Juve and Roma considering Adriano. Inter target Buffon or Mancini

Adriano’s likely departure from Inter at the end of the season is fuelling rumours of his future destination. As well as going abroad, it is believed the Brazilian striker could join another Serie A side. As a matter of fact, Juventus and Roma are allegedly willing to consider signing him. The giallorossi could play him next to Totti to form a formidable striking duo, while the bianconeri, who are also in the running for Toni, consider him one of the main candidates to replace Trezeguet if he leaves.

On their part, Inter might try and use Adriano as a way to get to Juventus’s Buffon or Roma’s Mancini, who is greatly admired by the Inter manager.

Fred is a good player ok, it does not matter to us but he has to pay his conduct of yesterday; maybe he will be suspended for some matches or "at time", kind almost for 6 months, or one year, don't know (if u consider what Navarro has done at the end of Valencia-Inter Fred in confront is a good guy lol!), I only know UEFA rules are so hard, but we've not to think about him, anybody can make mistakes ok but it has been too much.....
Also, Forza Roma and stop!:)

Anthony, Adriano? Think too expensive for us, but dreaming creates no costs ja!:)

I would like to face Milan in quarterfinals.(6)

Back to Adriano, as you said Paolo he's a bit expensive and wouldn't fit here. But if Inter would like to exchange with us some players, I wouldn't refuse.

If Celtic go through, I don't want to face them because I don't want Boruc to reach behind himself when Totti will shot.
