Roma’s Aquilani Ready For Man United

The young midfielder should be available for Champions League first leg at the Olímpico stadium in Rome.

Having suffered a couple of injuries in the last few months, Aquilani is now recovering in time for a much awaited comeback.

The player stated that tomorrow he will start training with the team again for the first time in over four weeks.

After damaging right knee ligaments last December, he pulled a muscle a month ago, when he was nearly fit to play, slowing his convalescence.

Aquilani’s availability could boost Roma’s hopes to progress in Champions League, especially as he will have to replace David Pizzarro, banned for the first United game.

A Giallorossi academy product, Aquilani has already been capped once for Italy and is considered one of the most promising talents of Italian football.

Finally!

Liverani: Bring on Roma

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fiorentina midfielder Fabio Liverani is looking forward to testing his side’s Champions League credentials against the mighty Roma.

The Viola are seventh in the table and have ambitions of a top four finish, despite their 15-point Calciopoli punishment, and this weekend’s Franchi clash will be an assessment of their abilities.

“Roma are one of the top eight teams in Europe, but we have been playing very well recently,” said the former Lazio captain.

“I think it will be an interesting match, an exciting one for both sides. I am sure we will play a great game against Roma.”

Liverani will certainly be hoping for a less controversial tie than the encounter he took part in last weekend at Palermo.

The 1-1 draw was marred by the dismissal of Coach Francesco Guidolin, who was outraged with Adrian Mutu’s goal after the Romanian played on despite Roberto Guana falling to the ground injured.

“I think Mutu behaved as he should have, he only saw Guana lose the ball and then faced two opponents before scoring,” added the 30-year-old.

“It was a great goal and we didn’t even have the time to celebrate because the Palermo players started to complain.

“I understand the players’ position, whereas Guidolin’s reaction seemed excessive.

“An official meeting was held recently to reiterate that only the referee can decide when the game must be halted.”

Roma eye Cicinho

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reports in Italy suggest that Roma boss Luciano Spalletti has renewed his interested in Real Madrid right-back Cicinho.

The Brazilian, who is considered as the heir to Marcos Cafu for the Selecao, has just returned to action after rupturing his right cruciate ligament in September.

However, the flying full-back, who holds an Italian passport, seems keen to leave Madrid, where he has never completely settled since his £3m move from Sao Paulo in 2005.

Cicinho’s proposed move might also be favoured by the fact that his new agents Mario Miele and Ovidio Colucci also represent Giallorossi ‘keeper Alexander Doni, a close friend of his.

The 26-year-old was close to joining the capital club last summer, when Roma had agreed to take him on loan, but the Merengues wanted to make a permanent sale and the negotiations stalled.

The latest reports suggest that Cicinho might land in Rome for something around £4m, a price that the Giallorossi would be willing to spend as they plan to reinforce their squad for next season.

Qualification for the Champions League quarter-finals has guaranteed Roma extra revenue, that the club intends to invest in new signings, with Vincenzo Iaquinta, Francesco Modesto and Jeremy Mathieu reportedly on their wish list.

Also, Roma plan to extend the contracts of some of their key players including Philippe Mexes, Amantino Mancini and Cristian Chivu.

Meanwhile, with David Pizarro, Cristian Wilhelmsson and Francesco Tavano all currently in Rome on co-ownership or loan deals, the club could invest some of that cash to make their stays at the Stadio Olimpico permanent.

Fiorentina - Roma

Stadio Franchi

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the race for Champions League qualification being blown wide open in recent weeks, Fiorentina and Roma will both be keen to assert their authority when they come face to face at the Stadio Artemio Franchi. There is still a long way to go, but both sides still have plenty of work to do if they are to reach their targets this season.

The Viola have done excellently recently to battle back from their Calciopoli deduction, but will need to keep picking up points against their direct competition if they are to have any chance of breaking into the Champions League places. The top four might be a massive 10-points away, but it wasn’t too long ago that people were saying the same thing about UEFA Cup qualification.

Influential midfielder Marco Donadel is still out of action through his injury, with Coach Cesare Prandelli expected to again hand the holding role to Michele Pazienza in his absence. Fellow midfielders Massimo Gobbi and Mario Santana are also suffering from injuries, while Manuele Blasi could be given a return to the first team at the expense of youngster Riccardo Montolivo.

Long-term absentee Gilberto Martinez is still struggling to recover for Roma. The good news for Coach Luciano Spalletti is that Cristian Chivu and Alberto Aquilani are ahead of schedule as they return from their injuries, although neither are likely to be ready in time for this match. That means that Matteo Ferrari should keep his place alongside Philippe Mexes in defence, with David Pizarro partnering Daniele De Rossi in midfield.

The Giallorossi may have a comfortable 11-point safety net in second place, but their recent form is starting to cause much concern on the Curva. At the Stadio Olimpico they are still the all-conquering Roma from the early part of the season, but on their travels it is a different story.

The capital club have failed to win in their last five away trips, including a defeat to Empoli and an embarrassing draw at bottom of the table Ascoli. With this game providing their toughest challenge on the road since their drop in form, Roma will need to show a significant improvement if they are to maintain their healthy advantage in the League table.

Man on fire: Simone Perrotta (Roma) – One of Serie A’s most under-appreciated players, Perrotta is hugely influential to Roma’s play and gives Francesco Totti the space he needs to thrive.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fiorentina (probable): Frey; Ujfalusi, Dainelli, Gamberini, Pasqual; Pazienza, Liverani, Blasi; Jorgensen, Toni, Mutu

Roma (probable): Doni; Panucci, Ferrari, Mexes, Tonetto; De Rossi, Pizarro; Taddei, Perrotta, Mancini; Totti

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Fiorentina is one of the best teams at the moment. Both Mutu and Toni are doing great. It will be a difficult opponent and is battling for a UEFA Cup spot.

Fiorentina 0 - 0 Roma

Stadio Franchi

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fiorentina played in 10 men for an hour, but still went close to beating Roma, who fall 18 points adrift of leaders Inter. It's the first home game since Cesare Prandelli took charge in which the Viola have failed to score.

Last season this was a head to head play-off for a Champions League spot and despite the Viola's 15-point Calciopoli penalty, little has really changed. Marco Donadel was out of action, while the Giallorossi had Alberto Aquilani and Cristian Chivu injured. Roma were looking for their first Serie A away win of 2007 and had not lost at the Stadio Franchi since April 2001.

Only Fiorentina season ticket holders were allowed into the game due to the Stadio Franchi's failure to adhere to strict new security standards. Simone Perrotta was at full stretch, just missing the target from Rodrigo Taddei's cross. There were timid penalty appeals for a Matteo Ferrari handling offence.

Roma had the first real chance when Sebastien Frey parried a Francesco Totti long-range strike and Perrotta's follow-up from six yards.

Totti has never scored in Florence and he went very close on 17 minutes, as Amantino Mancini's intelligent cutback allowed him to spring the offside trap, but the shot from eight yards skimmed the upright.

Moments later at the other end Luca Toni flicked the ball just wide following a splendid Adrian Mutu dummy, then Mancini's right-foot strike was turned out for a corner as it was end to end stuff.

Roma lost the ball in midfield and the Viola almost struck on the counter with Mutu setting up Toni, but Frey - marking his birthday - flew to fingertip a Perrotta header out from under the bar.

The game changed on 34 minutes, as Fiorentina captain Dario Dainelli received his second yellow card for a late tackle from behind on Totti, leaving his team in 10 men. Cesare Prandelli made big changes, throwing on Potenza and Manuele Blasi for Fabio Liverani and Martin Jorgensen.

Mancini hit the back of the net only for the offside flag to be raised, but Frey was in spectacular form, using an outstretched foot to deny Perrotta's point-blank finish after fine build-up from Totti and Taddei.

After the break Alexander Doni had to parry Toni's strike at the near post. In fact, 10-man Fiorentina were unlucky not to take the lead, as Manuel Pasqual's free kick curled over the wall and ended its journey on the near upright with Doni rooted to the spot.

Oddly, Roma seemed to take a very long time to get going in the second half, as the Viola were taking control. Yet on 58 minutes Mancini sprung the offside trap and chested down to hit the side-netting.

Frey performed another great save on Totti's fierce snapshot from 20 metres, then soon after he stuck out his leg to stop a David Pizarro free kick floating past everyone into the far corner.

The Giallorossi were now dominating and Totti's angled drive shaved a coat of paint off the far post.

Fiorentina did not give in and in stoppages Francesco Tavano had to improvise as a defender to clear a very dangerous free kick.

We could score some goals but today Sebastian Frey has been the better player on the field; shame, 11 against 10 we've to win the match, so the first 0-0 of the season, now we've only 9 points more than Lazio.....:boohoo:

Ferrari expects Roma extension

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Matteo Ferrari’s agent has revealed that the stopper will extend his relationship with capital city club Roma.

Although no longer a regular at the Stadio Olimpico given the fine form of Cristian Chivu and Philippe Mexes, the Italian should sign a new contract with the outfit before next season starts.

“Both Matteo and Roma want to renew their agreement,” representative Giovanni Corci told Radio Incontro.

“I don’t think there will be any problems with it at all. His desire will be more important than any economical reasons at the end of the day.”

Ferrari has proved to be a useful addition to the Giallorossi this term after his mixed loan stint at Everton in 2005-06.

After initially struggling since his 2004 move from Parma, Ferrari is aiding the capital cause and recently won the praise of captain Francesco Totti.

“He said that he needed to thank Matteo and Philippe [Mexes] for keeping out [Luca] Toni yesterday against Fiorentina,” added Corci.

“Matteo is delighted with such a compliment from the captain. The great respect which players have for each other on the pitch contribute to great results.”

Roma vs. Milan thread

We should win this game if we play to our potential. Milan are not that strong this season and most of their defenders have been making mistakes recently. Also Dida is prone to making errors and most of the times he can't save the long range shots well.

FORZA ROMA!!!!
