Zidane has retired right? So what's the use of the ban?

The FC Internazionale Milano centre-back has been handed a two-match ban and a €3,182 fine by FIFA for his part in the incident that saw Zinédine Zidane sent off in the FIFA World Cup final. The Italians are due to play Group B rivals Lithuania in Naples on 2 September before travelling to Paris to take on France again four days later. Zidane, meanwhile, has been given a three-match suspension for head-butting Materazzi, as well as a €4,773 fine, although he has retired from football so will instead spend three days doing community work for world football's governing body.

I'm surprised to see only a three-match ban for Zidane, and the fine amounts are absurdly low.

But honestly, there's nothing wrong with suspending Materazzi for a couple matches. He admitted that he provoked Zidane, and it's possible that his language severely crossed the line.

If FIFA are really going to try to sell this overarching Fair Play, Let's All Be Friends mantra, they have to back it up by banning the provoker.

hahaha, did you see anyone playing better than him? cuz i didn't see any.

yawn... Zidane had one great game against Brazil and that pretty much won it for him. Cannavaro got ripped off.

:nape: This has set a ridiculous precedent. Every player that gets sent off for retaliating now has grounds to get the instigator banned. Totally unjust and incredibly inconsistent based on the fact that this happens all the time.

How many times have the likes of Wayne Rooney, David Beckham and probably even Materazzi himself been sent off for retaliating due to provocation?? Learn to control yourself. Simple.

this was indeed a bad move from zidane, but i also think the mateRATzzi suspension is fair, and doesn't set a precedent, because mateRATzzi admited that he insulted zidane. there is a lot of retaliating due to provocation in football, but how many times did a player admited that he insulted his agressor? i don't remember a single one.

by the way, does anyone know if mateRATzzi will be able to play against france in the euro2008 qualifying?

he is 2 matchs suspended but italy have to play a friendly game, and a qualifying game before the match in saint-denis stadium. will the friendly game count in his suspension? i hope so just to see how the french crowd will welcome him

(then i also have to hope that nesta won't return and take his place)

AAHAHAHAH you idiot. Fabio Cannavaro was obviously the best player of the tournament. Id even say half of Italys starting lineup deserved it more than Zidane.

What was a biggery mockery of FIFA, the fact they gave that c*nt Zidane the golden ball or that Materazzi got banned 2 games for talking smack.... something as common in football(and all sports) as running into snobby douchebags in France. Au revoir

So he makes fun of his mother and sister and you ban him? For two matches??? If that's the case then we are going to have an average of 3-5 two match bans per game... The first game ever recorded in soccer history had these insults, it's ugly, but it's apart of the game. Absolutely unjustified and ridiculous... O well, we'll probably have Nesta anyways, lol.

So you punish the guy for being honest? What about when Maradona admitted he used his hands with the "Golden hand goal" against England in the 86' WC? I bet Fifa was laughing when they were watching that replay.

I care because I am a supporter of Materazzi through Italy and Inter and I care because it's bull$hit... I also care because I talk tons of "junk" during a game as well, lol.

The people who talk **** are the ones who lack skill, through my experiences.

Zidane shouldn't be stripped of the golden ball...if he was a man he would give it back because he doesn't deserve **** for what he did in the world cup.

and we should go back to euro 2004 and ban poulson for provoking totti...did the italians complain? no... totti's punishment was fair because he reacted, zidane reacted and instead he barely gets anything compared to what materazzi got. this is bull**** on fifa's part and i can't wait for this "provoker's precedent" to bite them on the ass.

what is it with ppl and insults on this forums are you all so touchy?

first of all i thought football was about goals and nice passing, and the flair, not about sleeping you to death, while i won't deny our part in the sleep inducing football, nobody can't deny that there was player that stood above the rest proposing attacking football with his passes goals and moves it was Zidane no one else.

ps: i thought we were born cynical not snobby.....

pps: by the way if you at least would've said Pirlo you would've had grounds for argument, but a defender? no way.
