world class forces you to play the game as it should be played in my opinion. I was going to reply to someone with this, but thought it'd be wise to give it a thread on it's own as it may help some other players out there.
Basically on world class, if you make a mistake the AI will more often than not make you pay with a goal. It is NOT that the AI cheats at all. A clean sheet is very difficult (at least for me so far.)
It more or less comes down to defense though so I'll give you some defensive hints which I've observed:
a) turn off auto-switching for EVERYTHING. This forces you to decide when to switch players. Sometimes it's better to let the CPU handle marking on your team while you stick to marking the man you're defender is assigned to.
b) again, play defense how you should. don't just constantly go after the ball. *LET* the AI pass it around as much as they want and keep a tight eye on their passing lanes. The AI likes to play the ball into the corner so it's wise to keep a tight eye on their wingers so if you see one run off - switch to that defender and immediately mark and cut off the crossing angle. If you notice the winger early enough and mark the winger ONLY, you can laugh at how the AI likes to pass the ball around continously on that wing trying to find an opening to the winger. If you mark well enough though it will kick it back to the middle eventually.
c) Along the lines of letting the AI play for you on defense while sticking to the one man you are marking. If you see the AI make a pass and you see one of your computer controlled defenders is very near to the receiver, and I mean near enough to perhaps intercept or take the player out, DO *NOT* switch to that player. Instead try holding the LEFT TRIGGER to call in your defender to make a challenge. If they get the ball you automatically get control of the the player. Again, be wise with this though. It's very tempting to continually press and hold left trigger, getting your defenders to leave their markers and exposing you heavily. I learnt that the hard way
d) I just discovered tonight what a blessing the "B" (or tackle) button is on my gamepad. I thought shoulder tackles were gone. Boy was I wrong. As an example, if the AI is driving with winger into the corner and about to cross, while your defender is almost infront of him to cut off the angle - PRESS & HOLD B(tackle). When the AI performs the cross your defender will jump in the air with his back to the ball trying to deflect the cross.
Also, use the B/tackle button wisely..Don't hold it continuously. Only hold it when you are *SURE* you are making contact, so to speak, with the AI players. Holding the Tackle button turns off your sprinting, so if you press and hold it too early you might see the AI run right by you.
Hope this helps some of you. I had many frustrations with the AI on world class till i learnt some these things to help me adapt. I do like it though how on world class, if you make a mistake you pay for it. Seems to eliminate the 8-0 or greater blowouts from the FIFA 2004 days
good luck! anyone else feel free to contribute or comment. heh
